Asia is terrible, but there is Prog Metal, Rap and R&B that is still far worse.
So vote for MSG! Eh, I mean SGM

Out of curiosity, why did you decide to do this poll. Was it because both have many detractors?
I mean I can say that Asia is maybe the worst band that would spring to my mind in Prog Related, and SGM would've been the first to spring to my mind as least liked in the RIO/Avant prog category (it's actually quite well liked by various people who are not seriously into RIO/Avant music). Or perhaps you chose SGM because you thought it would give Asia a chance to win?
It's not surprising that SGM would be leading because Asia is a much maligned stuporgroup.
|
SGM are the least liked in Avant? That's news to me.
I guess I can sort of understand liking Asia, but you shouldn't be surprised that most people prefer almost anything else. |
I didn't mean that SGM is the least liked in the RIO/Avant category, I meant that it was the one that I least liked (thought that was clear especially considering my earlier post), and I have a very large collection of music in that category. Having revisted it, I do like the band more. Still, I don't think it's ever going to become as liked as say Art Zoyd to me. I'm curious why the poll starter thought of this poll. EDIT: which I see he answered well above. Thanks, Manuel.

My brain ticks in quite simple ways, I was going over my collection and got stuck at the Asia albums, wich I like quite a lot. Suddenly I thought: The majority of PA Forum Users probably hate Asia, they will probably find them cheesy, poppy, too AOR, etc. Then I thought of bands I find irritating, headache causing, absolutely unlikeable, etc, but who are probaly considered very prog, very avantgarde, very cool by the good folks on the PA forum. SGM came up! Voila - thatīs why I paired them.

Zing! As I always say, to each his or her own tastes. Most members here can't help but share some tastes even if they would rather not share any of the same tastes with certian people. I might move to CrunkArchives so I could feel fairly assured of my own musical palette's superiority, but really I don't think my taste is objectively good -- just good for me. You like Asia, I prefer Area. Vive la difference.

Of course! Those of us that voted Asia are merely idiots aren't we? So sad that I have no taste. |
You have taste, even if it's bad taste. ;)

If Asia went with the style that UK had I would have voted for them but it is Sleepytime for me.

Probably good reason, then, why it's such a ridiculed band. What I really hated about that debut album is that it had this kind of bad prog quality mixed with pop/ Arena rockish stuff. It's vapid and quite overwrought. I like a lot of pop music -- especially 60's French pop, and so-called Avant Pop.

SGM is about the only band in the Avant Prog category that I can think of that didn't really appeal to me (rather disliked). I only have Of Natural History and hadn't listened to it in years. It has elements that I love, and I could see it being a three star album for my tastes, maybe four if more of it clicked. Though not a fan of SGM, I think Asia horrid (mind you, I've only heard the debut in full and not for more than twenty years, but I have listened to various Asia tracks over the last few years which I thought pretty sucky). So a vote for SGM.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is not only better than Asia, but better than every band.
