I guess this is the official, official release from Phil.......I just read the CNN post on this. I agree, before coming here he did sound very disappointed with what he now hears and sees on MTV and probably Grammy award shows. I also hear undertones of depression...hopefully that is just a sign of retiring...but I agree with all.
I am not surprised if there is depression, I mean he made his living playing drums and singing...he can't play drums anymore and with hearing issues probably has difficult time singing comfortably...What else does he have?
Hopefully he will at least continue to write music and maybe produce for other artists.......in time.
I hope all the best for him....this is one band I never got to see live and is one I will always regret not seeing!!

Brr. I found that harrowing. By the quotes posted in here, I'd really like it if he had a long talk with someone |

This is very sad. And he indeed sounds depressed... Anyways, has there been any official announcement? I can't find anything on his official site. Anyways, he will really be missed. |

I thought he'd retired from 'music' years ago?

However, for me he did much better pop music than the one that is being done nowdays.

Dunno, as a solo artist he was still like Elton John: you could tell which Disney-tunes were his and which ones not. I'm going to miss his contributions. But it's true what he says, there's no place for his ballads in the mainstream world of today :(

It was about time.
I was already sure the band would never reunite except the pathetic trio. I wish the best for Phil, and hope his ears and hands get better, but I won't miss his music or him as a singer. Hard but honest Iván

This is terrible news. He makes it sound like he's in major pain too from his statement.

Some quotes from him
]
He claims that it was this success and the overplaying of his music which made people "want to strangle" him.
Yeah. He sounds pretty damned depressed. Edited by DisgruntledPorcupine - March 05 2011 at 18:45 |

Wait wait wait, More Fool Me is your favorite song on SEBTP!?
He's probably upset about the hipsters celebrating Phil Collins day. Edited by Henry Plainview - March 05 2011 at 09:00 |

This recent vocal is lovely and feels like a goodbye. Check out the look on his face during the break about half way through. I don't play Phil solo stuff much, but I'll miss the guy too if he stays retired.

Damn... No Genesis reunion after all. Really a shame this is due to health issues.

Yes he has, and I think Jim is right about there being underlying depression issues. Still, a shame, he's given me a great deal of pleasure over the years.

I do feel sorry. Another drummer stops after Bruford, though for totally different reasons.
I do hope he finds some fun in being retired, and he doesn't fall into a depression.

I briefly caught some of his recent concert in NY on tv yesterday, where he was singing all those old Motown tunes, the first thing that struck me was how old and frail and a little unsure of himself he was, it shocked me, i hope there isn't something more serious wrong with him. It is a sad day that he's retiring and that he also feels hated.
