Although The Black Album is perhaps Metallica's most accessible album it's puzzling how it managed to sell as well as (or even better than) The White Album. The 25 years that separate the two albums shifted the market place entirely but still..
Overall the two albums appear completely different, yet individual songs like Helter Skelter are not far from what's presented on The Black Album. The music hasn't changed that much except that is has become more differentiated and focused on one particular style of music. The Beatles were inventive and were all over the musical spectrum.
The metal community is strong on PA and I had expected that to affect the preference, but I overlooked the fact that the same community dislike The Black Album more almost any of Metallica's other output.

But of course. Load is a great album, but a bit overlong. The Outlaw Torn is their best song if you ask me.

The White Album. A milestone full of awesomeness that had set a few standards in music. As for The Black Album, don't tell me it's not good - because it is. It's just not as good as some other Metallica's albums. And it was a landmark for the shift in band's career, which was a good thing (yes, good!) - it's responsible for acceptance of (thrash) metal based music to the wider masses. And I like Load more than Death Magnetic, sue me.

The Black Album suckssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Sorry, but christ, that is one boring, uninspiring album.
Don't love the White album, but it's better than the Black Album

This is actually tough. I'm a pretty serious Metallica fan, but The Black Album is one of my least favorites from them. It's got quite a few great songs such as The God That Failed and My Friend of Misery, but half the album has been played to death by radio stations and the band live. I was absolutely crazy about this album when I first heard it ten years ago, when all the songs were somewhat on the same line familiarity-wise. Still very enjoyable once a year.
The White Album is perhaps my least favourite Beatles album from their output starting with Rubber Soul. First it felt a bit like a big bag of filler, but later I've grown to like the most of the songs a lot. I rather enjoy even Revolution 9. And it's got perhaps my favourite Beatles song in Blackbird.
So, an album that I can't play more often than once a year in danger of overplaying it and an album I keep liking more and more. White it is.

The White Album is probably my least favorite Beatles record but I'm not a gigantic fan of The Black Album either... :/ I'd probably say The White at least.

^ None of those are even close to filler.
A terrible Metallica album vs. an album recorded as the Beatles were in their songwriting prime and this is expected to be close?
I understand why the Black Album is the representative Metallica album here, but that prevents this poll from even being a contest.

depends what you mean bt "filler" -- Rocky Raccoon, Yer Blues, Martha, WDWDiitR, Birthday, Sexy Sadie, Cry Baby Cry, I Will, is that filler? Besides it was the relaxed quality that gave the record its magic.. but then I'm sure you realize that

I as a matter of fact like The Black album of Metallica a lot, I guess it's my favourite of them. On the other hand, The Beatles White Album has too much filler for me, with just a few very good songs... but one of them, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, is my very favourite Beetles song. However, I guess I vote Black.

White Album. It's actually the only Beatles album I own currently (though I'll one day grab a few more), and while I own most of Metallica's albums, the Black album is my least favorite of the ones I own. I only like a few songs on it actually (Of Wolf And Man, Unforgiven, and Sad But True). It's a transition album that isn't as heavy as their previous work and doesn't rock as hard as the Load albums.

I'm with Raff.. I love some of Metallica's earlier albums, but they took a huge step down with Metallica.

Metallica's Master of Puppets is one of my favourite metal (and not just metal) albums of all time, but the so-called ' Black Album' is, in my humble opinion, one of the most boring albums ever recorded (and no, I am not going to use the O word  ). There is just no comparison whatsoever with the Beatles' White Album, which contains some genuine classics.

Anyway, I'm not really familiar with Metallica's black album so I can't vote, but I suspect that Spinal Tap's black album would beat it for me.

Both borderline prog and In terms of sales almost equally popular but what is PA's preference?
(I know this poll belongs in the "proto prog/prog related" lounge but for some reason I am unable to create in the proper lounge so some PA authority please move!)
(And BTW, why can't I allow single voting with replies?!.....I guess you can't tell me as your reply is not allowed  )
