A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers?

It gets all the praise it deserves, so it’s not underrated.
It deserves all the praise it gets, so it’s not overrated.

Peter Hammill’s Flight, on the other hand, is an excellent epic that is rarely mentioned. So if not exactly underrated, I surely think it’s undermentioned.
He say nothing is quite what it seems;
I say nothing is nothing
(Peter Hammill)

I always see VDGG fans defend this one as being up there with Supper's Read and Close to the Edge, but I don't really think it is. I feel that it just gets bogged down. I think there's a good eight minute section in the middle of it where my interest just vanishes entirely.

I'm not even sure if there is such thing as an underrated epic, because when someone releases an album, a twenty minute song is inevitably going to receive the most attention. I think I might say Marsbeli Kronikak by Solaris. Although, I haven't heard that one in years, so that might just be nostalgia talking.

VdGG fans don't "defend" "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers"; there is absolutely no reason to defend it. Wink If you don't like it, fine; that's your problem. I definitely prefer it to "Supper's Ready" and "Close to the Edge", both of which are a bit too tame for my taste. I consider "The Gates of Delirium" to be a lot better than "Close to the Edge", simply because it bites more.

Very true. But it gives me nightmares.

I think Procol Harum's In Held Twas In I is a fairly underrated epic, considering it was one of the first prog epics.

Not underrated, simply too little known: All three epics on Mother Gong's album "Fairy Tales":
Wassilisa 22: 28
The Three Tongues 12:41
The Pied Piper 14:38

Have to agree with The Final Cut as criminally underrated.
Overrated - Tubular Bells. I have three versions of it as I thought I was missing something, but it just doesn't click for me.  Olffield can remix and rerecord it 10 more times, but I'm done with it.

I'd agree its overrated, but, the last 6 minutes are amazing... The rest of the track, other than the awesome drum track, is a bit... Meh.

This Strange Engine by Marillion is sooo underrated.

Remember the jester who showed you tears; a script for tears"

How about for an underrated epic - In The Dead of Night/By the Light of Day/In the Dead of Night(reprise) by UK.  I won't make any fans for this, but even though Rush is one of my favorite bands of all time, I think 2112 is overrated.

Agree with CTTE title track as a bit overrated (though the Mander Pipe Organ interlude is awesome!)  Would change your underrated selections (any from ToTO) to "Awaken" from GFTO.  Why doesn't anyone else think this is one of the best songs Yes ever did?

I think Grendel is overrated. It somehow developed cult status, but once you get down to listening it isn't anything more than a sub-standard Genesis knock off.

One that never seems to get mentioned is Fand by The Enid - a wonderfully coherent piece that is the very definition of 'epic'
