Do you think there are epics that get much more praise than they deserve or the opposite , any underlooked ones in your book?
To me one underlooked epic is " The Ikon" another one could be "Pirates"
Overrated ones could be "The Garden of Dreams" and "Octavarium"

The Ikon by Todd Rundgren's Utopia is one of my favourite epics from the 70's, highly underrated.
Other underrated epics in my opinion:
-Lizard by King Crimson -Song of Scheherazade by Renaissance -Most of the Epics off of Odyssey "The Greatest Tale" -Solar Musick Suite by Steve Hillage -Anonymus Two (the combined track) by Focus (it seems no one likes this but me!? Its so bluesy and chill to listen to!) -Baker Street Muse by Jethro Tull -The Geese And The Ghost by Anthony Phillips
Overrated Epics:
-The Truth Will Set You Free by The Flower Kings -Karn Evil 9 by Emerson, Lake & Palmer -Nine Feet Underground by Caravan (Its good, but not GREAT!) -Hamburger Concerto by Focus (Also good, but no better than the other Epics by Focus!) -Awaken by Yes -Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield (His other works are much greater than this, its just known due to its soundtrack status in my opinion)

I'm glad we're agreed on "The Narrow Margin"! I've even heard some people say that it's the weakest moment on Subterranea! Nonsense.
To the above poster - How is 2112 underrated?! It's one of the best loved epics in prog and so it should be! Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is indeed rubbish though, but I'm pretty sure everyone thinks that.

Underrated:
"Islands" by Singularity - Here's a fantastic song by a relatively unknown band. The album it comes from "Of All the Mysteries" has a 4.2 rating though only eleven ratings. If you're looking for something really good from the last couple of years, I highly recommend.
"I am the Sun" by The Flower Kings - Wonderful song, it amazes me that this band doesn't have a single four star album. As "I Am the Sun" is my favorite epic by them, I'm giving it my vote. In general I think The Flower Kings as a band are underrated.
"Snow" by Spock's Beard - I believe that a concept album would be considered an epic (in my mind at least). Great double CD the whole way through.
I'm not going to comment on the what I think is overrated as it will just irritate the fans.

I don't think 6 degrees is rubbish. I think the overture is rubbish, and that said crappy overture is followed by a collection of great songs that don't really form a whole, therefore not qualifying as an epic xD.

I can't think of very many overrated epics. Karn Evil 9 seems a bit overrated to me. Hemispheres seems a bit overrated, too.
...However, I have a few for underrated. I'd like to start off with the two Rush epics off of "Caress of Steel". The Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth are so good, yet they're so overlooked. I have to admit, they are a bit unfocused, but they are so good. I especially like the Necromancer. The opening guitar piece is incredible, and Alex's guitar effects for this song are great. I also love the narration for this song. If anything, this has to be Alex's finest our on guitar. Same thing with Lamneth. Lamneth is so epic. It's 20 minutes do not bore me and I think it's well made. Alex's guitar work on here, like The Necromancer, has to among his best...
...Another underrated epic not by a band named Rush? I would have to go with Duke's Travels/Duke's End by Genesis. I love Duke, and I think it's one of their best albums. Duke's Travels, while not being their last epic, was certainly one worth mentioning due to the fact that unlike the other epics later on in their career, this is the last one that shows off their top notch musicianship. Tony's keywork on Duke's Travels is incredible, and Phil Collin's drumwork is also amazing. Mike never did a whole lot on guitar, but for Duke's Travels he was close to Steve Hackett's level in terms of guitar work, especially towards the end when they do the reprise for Guide Vocal. I applaud Genesis for making that epic. If only they could have kept doing that later in their career, but oh well, you can't change the past.

Moon In June is one of those songs that bring a smile to my face everytime I hear it, I listen to it very very frequently too. I love the rest of that album, and I love Fourth, but in a way them going instrumental kind of hurt a little bit. I love instrumental music often more but I also really love Wyatt's voice. Perhaps the reason Moon in June is so good.

I think Grendel is overrated. It somehow developed cult status, but once you get down to listening it isn't anything more than a sub-standard Genesis knock off.
One that never seems to get mentioned is Fand by The Enid - a wonderfully coherent piece that is the very definition of 'epic'

Overrated epic (and overrated being understood to mean a song that many others seem to enjoy that I don't really get anything out of, in anticipation of the inevitable floods of people who will talk about how overrated and underrated are meaningless, or whatever): Plague of Lighthouse Keepers. I always see VDGG fans defend this one as being up there with Supper's Read and Close to the Edge, but I don't really think it is. I feel that it just gets bogged down. I think there's a good eight minute section in the middle of it where my interest just vanishes entirely.
I'm not even sure if there is such thing as an underrated epic, because when someone releases an album, a twenty minute song is inevitably going to receive the most attention. I think I might say Marsbeli Kronikak by Solaris. Although, I haven't heard that one in years, so that might just be nostalgia talking.

VdGG fans don't "defend" "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers"; there is absolutely no reason to defend it. If you don't like it, fine; that's your problem. I definitely prefer it to "Supper's Ready" and "Close to the Edge", both of which are a bit too tame for my taste. I consider "The Gates of Delirium" to be a lot better than "Close to the Edge", simply because it bites more.

A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers?
It gets all the praise it deserves, so it’s not underrated. It deserves all the praise it gets, so it’s not overrated.
Peter Hammill’s Flight, on the other hand, is an excellent epic that is rarely mentioned. So if not exactly underrated, I surely think it’s undermentioned.

I'll grant that it does require some imagination to see how the four tracks relate to one another, but that's part of the fun. To me, ELP seems to be envisioning different eras of the future and comparing those to past and present times. Or maybe "Karn Evil 9" is supposed to be like a series of science fiction novels.

I really like the distinction between underrated and undermetioned, very thoughtful!
Here are some that fit both distinctions IMO.
For songs:
Salisbury (Uriah Heep) The Valentyne Suite (Colosseum) Eruption (Focus) Nihonjin and Too Many People (Far Out) At the End of the Day (SB)
For epic concept albums:
Generation 13 (Saga)
Let's mention some more!

strangely "Meurglys III - the Songwriter's Guild" by VdGG does not get the attention it deserves. which other epic starts as a fugue and ends as a reggae?

Deriving from what I have read from these forums, I'd say Close to the Edge is a bit overrated. It just doesn't tick to me as brilliant as to others it seems. It could be so much more...
Underrated - this has been mentioned before, but I'll say so again. Songs of Scheherazade by Renaissance. A symphonic orchestra has never been used better in a rock composition. In fact at times it doesn't even feel like rock anymore - more like impressionistic classical music.

Overrated: Anything from DT Underrated: Trespass with its magnificient Stagnation. I also think many great tracks by Uriah Heep like July Morning and Salisbury somehow doesn't get the right amount of highlight, but maybe that's just me.

Overrated (I'll only do one so I don't create a huge fuss): Karn Evil 9
Underrated: The Shaming of the True by Kevin Gilbert (one of the best concept albums ever) ? by Neal Morse (How is this not in the top 100?!?!) The Night and the Silent Water by Opeth (one of my favorite by them, but is overlooked because it is early in their career)
