Oh, I think I'm much nicer on the Web than in real life. ... I have a wicked sarcastic streak that I cannot use here because it can so easily be missinterpretted. Without the bio-feedback of facial expression and body language that kind of exchange is impossible on the web and just comes across as plain cruel and nasty - even with emoticons....
What does actually mean at the end of a post? Does that really make things okay?

Personally, I don't think people behave very differently on the web than they are in real life. There may be a few exceptions, but I believe that, if someone is mean-spirited in RL, and will be so on the Internet - and the other way round, of course. Yes, there are a few 'Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde' cases around, but on the whole nice people will keep on being nice, and mean ones will keep on being mean.

Glad to see you took my suggestion and made this its own thread, Ehron.
I for one can tell you that I have been cyber-bullied quite a bit. I said this before, but what the hell, I'll say it again!
I think when people get on the net (even grown adults who should know better) automatically feel like they are back in Highschool, and therefore have the right to start acting like ignorant kids all over again. It's a form of escapism, really; someone has a sh*tty day, but he can't very well take his fustration out on his wife and kids, so instead he goes online and trolls, bitches and bullies. Not because he's a horrible person all the time, just when he ceases to be John Butter and turns into bttrman5000, or whatever. All of a sudden he feels free, and that can be very liberating.
Anyone else think this could be the case, here?
See, for someone like me who is young enough to have seen the internet arrive by my teen years, I've always equated my net relationships with my real ones, and treat them both with just as much respect and care, or at least I try to, considering the distance and lack of voice interaction. But for someone like bttrman, who is actually much older than I, the internet is fairly new, and he has the luxury of pretending like he is in fact much younger than I am, and gets to say really mean, sh*tty immature things online to get his anger out.
Maybe I'm off, but I think this could be a very real problem. Luckily not everyone abuses the freedom of internet speech, but for those of us who do, we can get carried away.
What say you? Am I wrong?

A Troll is someone who trolls the forum looking for people to annoy - the word is not derived from northern folklore but from sea fishing where several baited lines are drawn behind a boat (as opposed to trawl - which uses nets).

Absolutely - bottom line is it only takes a moment's thought before hitting the post button to consider how you're going to come across; if everyone was a little more considered, rather than sending random bile into the ether, it'd make my job as a moderator considerably easier...
As would a taser.

I do think that there are so frequently meanies on the net that unfortunately we're led to almost expect that someone is being mean in a posting, often leading to outrage where there need not be any. I know I am guilty of getting my back up reading a post that was not designed to do that. It's sad really,

I think 'worried' is the wrong word; "fed up with" is nearer the mark - incidentally, it's easier to read a post as being ironic if for example a " " emoticon is used.
You were being ironic, I assume? After all, I cannot think you'd pop into a thread just to randomly insult other members... that way just leads to problems...

I've never seen any outright hostility on here either. For the most
part the discussions are always civil and fun. That's part of the
reason I've stayed with this forum, because of how relaxed the
atmosphere is here. I agree with you on the IMDB forum. Youtube also has its share of idiots posting there. I used to frequent a Smashing Pumpkins message board called Netphoria. I never registered as a member, mostly due to how rude and obnoxious everyone was to each other. It was pretty funny though reading over some of those arguments and posts on that forum.

I like it here especially BECAUSE it's a community of friendly people who share a common interest.
Generally I find keyboard ninjas irritating and thankfully this forum is moderated effectively. In the past I've seen the occasional trolls disappear after a very short time.
My thanks to those responsible for doing such a great job here.

99% of the internet is bored people looking for something to do. hence 99% of the problems on the internet. most of the problems ive seen here come from people taking offense to something that was completely innocent in nature, or just misinterpreted. people need to lighten the hell up. its the internet. why take anything seriously?

And yes, it is ridiculously pie in the sky. |
well the MORE YOU KNOW part was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek! some people get it. Some don't.
as someone already said, civility/diplomacy should coincide with every interaction between humans......
|
No, I get the joke, I just don't see how it's relevant to your post.
I guess it depends on how strongly you interpret the word civility. I think people need to stop taking words on a screen so seriously, I didn't think the "argument" this was in response to was that big of a deal, but maybe that's just me and my inability to express positive emotion...

I assume you are being jocular, as your statement seems counterproductive..... anyway, this was merely meant as a vehicle for thinking and discussing human nature at large and how the internet has affected sensibilities and common decency in a negative way..... really I just wanted to see everyone's take on it.... Strange how in this age of accelerated information evolution (and supposed inter-connectedness), we may have actually devolved as a species..... not that I am necessarily a luddite, but there are parts of Neo-luddite-ism that appeals to my primal aspects... in effect, people are accessing their primal instincts online by showing who is tougher or a better word-smith, or better at debates..... In short a good majority of people treat it as a form of competition or "one-up-manship" than is necessary... at least in my opinion... but then again I tend to think of most people as self-absorbed little win-at-any-cost machines... (occasionally) myself included.... Why the need for competition? Can't we help each other evolve in better ways than that? I guess in the end- humility seems to be lacking.... which takes absolute self-awareness and honesty (in spite of possibly not liking what you are inside of your truthful mind).... basically, this is a stage for charlatans and fakes who can live vicariously and be the superhuman they may not be in REAL LIFE..... So what can I do about it, you ask? I can turn off my computer and go about my real life. Or is real life too painful?
