On the other hand, I would imagine that the IQ of the average prog fan is more likely to be higher than that of the average person. If we weren't so smart, we'd be listening to crap. I would figure the low end of the prog IQ is 110, maybe higher, so is it really so strange that a third have an IQ above 150, especially when you factor in the bragging quotient...that is, that people are going to pump up their numbers...if they scored 145, well hell that's close enough to 150? And that the 110ers aren't as likely to post their scores? Remember, prog fans are not a random sample. It would be the same if we asked all modern pop music fans and had an average of 14. In a random sample, statistically impossible, but not in a non-random sample, which is what we are getting here.

Of course in a Britney or Snoop Dog forum the average would probably be bellow 110 by far, but 33% over 150 is way too much.
Just think this, the guys from the test sell you a certificate to prove your IQ, Would you buy a 100 or 110 certificate?
I guess not, because that's the average, so nothing to boast about. They need many preople to buy their paper.
The only guys that would buy it are those who score high IQ, so this test is designed to boost the IQ of the people who have normal superior, they will get a certificate of 150 with which they could brag for a year that they are genius.
Specially when the instructions say that above 146 you are "gifted", in other words their purpose is get as many people as posible with 147 above.

Although if your score is 150, it is more likely that your real IQ is 149 or 151 rather than 135 or 165. |
I asked her the exact question, the deviation could be +/- 5% or 10%, but she told me that happens in normal circumstances, every test has a margin of error, normally bellow +/- 3%.
But in this specific case (Acording to the Psychologist), the 12 minutes test( http://www.testcafe.com/iqtest/ ), has been apparently manipulated in order to boost some scores, so you buy their service, because unless you see a very high score, you won't buy their extended chart, remember that the test is for free, but the document they send you not.
Consider this, 34 members of Prog Archives have taken this test, and 10 are above 150, this is statitically impossible in any random sample as in this case, probably not more tan 2 /1000 have a 150 or more IQ.
In my case, I took the 2 hours test when I was recruited for this company, I scored 142, but in this test I scored 154, despite it's English (Not my native language) and it was late in the night, so I was sleepy.
12 points more is way above the standard deviation.

The standard deviation of the IQ test is 15, though that's a different concept than from you are discussing right now.

So if you have 150, your real IQ is probably between 135 - 142.

Asked to the expert in the personnel department about the test in the front page.
She explained me in technical words that i hardly understood, but to summarize that test has a deviation of + 5 to + 10% in the final result.
So if you have 150, your real IQ is probably between 135 - 142.
She knew about this short tests, are a good tool for fast exams, because a company doesn't care too much if you are a genius, they care only if your IQ is in a normal range and that can be answered by this short tests, but according to her, this one has been manipulated to boost the results, specially for people who is over 130.
Bellow 130 the deviation doesn't exist, because the target people that companies search for is between 110 - 130 (except for crucial positions, but those positions are normally covered by people recruited directly from the Universities or experts in a determined field, so they don't take the test), .
BTW: She also told me that a false low is very common, depending uin various conditions, or even the mood you are in, she said that she relies more in the personality test than in the IQ one.

Haha, more like 'way too pretentious and convoluted to be anywhere other than a prog forum'... But I'm glad you like them. Really, any excuse for music discussion... I haven't got those two yet - I'm trying very hard not to place another order until... oh I don't know. Until I can't wait any longer. I've already succumbed to downloading Guapo's 'Elixirs' today, because I was so enraptured by 'Black Oni'. Then I went and got me an Efterklang album too (because someone uploaded it for me, but I'm having a filesharing moratorium... so I bought it instead. ). I'm beyond help!! Maybe I should do that IQ test again to keep myself on topic...
