Er, how about Elton John trying out for Gentle Giant, but being turned down when he played Derek some of the songs he was writing. It is true.

Iommi's brief spell in Tull included their appearance in the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, if you're interested - I think it's available on DVD.

We heard that before but...I'm really curious about how HELP would sound. Iommy's guitar sound in Tull. Yummy!
BTW: did anyone heard Jimi Hendrix/Jim Morrison album? Any good?

Steve Gould of Rare Bird was a contender to replace Gabriel. I almost replaced Tony Banks...but sadly I woke up.

Terry Reid was asked by Jimmy Page to sing lead vocals in the new band he was assembling. Reid's career was just starting to gather momentum after some successful tours of the USA with the Stones and Cream so he declined but suggested that Page check out a guy named Robert Plant...

Fish was supposed to sing the part of Montresor in Peter Hammill's opera "The Fall of the House of Usher", but at the audition it turned out their voices were too similar, so Andy Bell of Eraser got the job

It mentioned in the linner notes of the 2003(?) reissue of The Yes Album, as it was the first album without Banks. I think I might have read it in Q's prog rock special from three years ago as well. |

Iommi replaced Mick Abrahams after This Was for a couple weeks before Barre joined. However, Barre had auditioned to be in Sabbath. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIbI6Yl8J_U The only other auditioning stories I know are the more obvious ones like Les Claypool trying out for Metallica after Cliff died. There are many stories about John Frusciante auditioning for Frank Zappa, but he has said that he chickened out and left the audition before his turn came. |

I believe Tommy Iomi tried out for Yes before they settled on Howe. That could have been interesting.

Emerson asked Steve Howe (Steve was not yet with YES) to join him after The Nice broke up and oddly enough Emerson was asked to join YES around the time of Moraz's departure from the band. |

wOw, interesting topic! kudos!
i remember some sort of band situation having been discussed inbetween ian gillan and keith emerson during the “rock aid armenia“ project in 1989. during the same time roger hodgson, who is good mates with trevor rabin, was bandied about as the new lead singer in YES and chris squire, of course, brought billy sherwood into the equation as early as 1989. certainly a year of turmoil for YES (with ABWH and everything) as well as many other bands. |

Well, it didn't matter how hard they tried to find a substitute: they could not perform in UK and a significant part of Europe because of the audience reaction towards the new singer. In the UK, they cursed the new singer throughout the show wile throwing beer bottles and screaming: "we want Anderson!!!!!" Steve Walsh tried out on vocals when Jon Anderson split around the drama period (yes must of had progressive rocks in their heads hiring those buggles blokes instead) walsh's voice was at its best around this period.

Vagelis almost was Yes's keyboardist after Wakeman's departure, but things didn't worked out between him and Anderson.
Also on Yes: on 70, when King Crimson was falling apart (after In the Wake of Poseidon release but before Lizard), Robert Fripp was called to play on Yes. However things did not worked out. So Fripp put a band together to record Lizard and, being thankful for the invitation to Yes, called Jon Anderson to sing on the song Lizard. |
