whatever, the list isn't really based on skill, but on popularity.  And it would be even harder to make one on talent because it would be even more argued among people for it is hard to make a list like that without any biases.

Have you ever been hit in the head by a rolling stone? LOL
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

As Ian Anderson put it, all of three decades ago: "I have no time for Time Magazine or Rolling Stone".

^ Not to mention all of the great prog bands that we love on this site who aren't even nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame.

This joke of a list is old; it dates back to 2003. I remember when it came out and thinking WTF, especially with regard to Jack White and Kurt Cobain's placement as well as the omission of guys like Allan Holdsworth and a whole slew of Steely Dan session masters like Elliott Randall, Denny Dias, Dean Parks, and Jay Graydon. However, I was pleased to see them give some love to Richard Thompson and Zoot Horn Rollo.

You should keep in mind that Rolling Stone hasn't been a truly credible or viable entity in its coverage of contemporary music in decades. Therefore a list like this is nothing more than what it really is, a complete and utter joke. Now I hear that they want to induct acts like Madonna and the Beastie Boys into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame while passing over worthy acts like the Stooges, the Ventures, and Todd Rundgren.

^  I know, I know.  That is another thread discussion, which I avoided because of my complete lack of knowledge of punk.  And I am not knocking punk per se, I am just commenting on the premise that punk was based upon more simplistic playing in comparison to the "pretentious" playing of the 70's prog bands.

Don't knock the punk rock!

Roy Buchanan is on the list so it can't be all bad! Wink

It would have been nice to see Rory Gallagher on the list, as well as the under-rated Mick Box from Uriah Heep Thumbs%20Up

...and there will be a plethora of other guitarists that others will think are far worthier, too!

I agree with you. What a "strange" list that is.

Rolling Stone is just this castrated rag that used to be on the cutting edge, but now just knuckles under and goes with the status quo. Having Cobain up there is the 'popular' thing to do.

Maybe non-prog, but I feel one of the best guitarists is ex-Eagle Don Felder. A true technician who put so much emotion into every solo. He could blow the pick-ups off a lot of the guitarists on that list.

I've seen this list, quite an old one.
Cobain as No. 12- the list is not worth discussion. Neither is the whole magazine really.

What really amazes me is that you still take that mag seriously... There was another, identical thread last year, and the reactions were exactly the same. Well, I can understand their first nine choices, at least as regards their historical value, but the rest of their choices are by and large absolutely laughable. It really escapes me how Page can be # 9 and Blackmore only #55.. And the less said about Cobain and Jack White the better!Dead

Forgot to say, if anyone is interested in lists go to http://digitaldreamdoor.com/   On the home page click music lists.  I think about every instrument and genre is coverd.  Including prog.  It's fun to read all the lists but a tad bit time consuming.  Smile
