Are you a professional musician, semi-pro, wanna-be pro, or an at-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player?

The internet has sort of blurred some lines, but I'd call myself an experienced amateur. I don't make my living from music...yet. :)

Have you recorded your own compositions ?  Got samples online ?

Sure! Just released an album last July. "Starkaudio" - Feel free to grab it from http://lukestark.com

What instrument(s) do you play?

It's all in the machine these days, but I claim to play guitar, bass and keys.

What instrument(s) do you wish you could play?

Well, I wish my singing was better.

Do you play Prog or another type?

I'm trying to figure that out. It's a mix of a lot of things, but "classic prog" it isn't. It's prog-infuenced *something*.

Anyway, comments on y'alls music:

I read as far back as mid 2008 and found these people with work online...

@Friso - Nice guitar work there, and I agree the drummer is sick-good. Did you guys ever record anything in the studio? I'd love to hear it.

@Bj-1 - Love the jam, I was never very good at improv, which makes your track all the more appealing. I really enjoy the bit around 5:02...reminds me of King Crimson. (I hope that doesn't offend.)

@Philamelian - More Jazzy prog. Nice keyboard work as well.

@Amaury - Reminds me of surf music a bit. Very good.

@Moderan - Arson (alt take) has a great slinky feel. Get's a bit weird, but I like it.

@ Dr. No 7134 - I think a lot of power is lost in the recording, but I'd love to hear it fully. Did you guys ever rerecord anything?

@AlbertMond - Hehheh...yeah well. *you* said defile, not me. But at least you had the cajones to record and publish. Not sure about the racist bits, but maybe those were meant to shock people.

@JPlanet - Shadow Circus is definately prog. That was 2007? Did "
Whispers and Screams" get release?

@Negoba - Beautifully recorded. Nice vocal work.

I'm a musictherapy student and I play (mainly) steelstring guitar, electric guitar, bassguitar, drums, piano and some other percussive instrumetns. I still want to play '70 senthisizors like the moog, mellotron (who wouldn't?) and organ. My main instrument is the guitar

I'm currently in a rock band with Dutch hiphop vocals. I write the material and the vocalist writes the lyrics. The songs are about social themes and current happenings.

I once had a progressive band on the musicschool where I had guitar lessons. If you are interesten you can check out these two tracks. I wrote the material before I ever seriously listened to prog. It must have been in my veins! Links to youtube:

I play the piano. And the kalimba. If that counts to anything. Not much to play there. LOL

Yes, I gravitate towards prog. But I also play a lot of classical music and I have free'ish improvisations often enough. They end up sounding like the modulations of Keith Emerson + modal jazz + impressionistic piano music. Although, don't get me wrong, I'm not boasting. I'm not as good as that at all. They just sound like that a bit.

Bass, computer and started the dulcimer.
I consider having drums the day I would live in a house and not in a sh*tty flat in the awful town of Paris.

Once, made an unreleased two-tracks demo with a thrash-metal band. Also recorded a few dark-ambient / industrial tunes that I should have put on Last.fm if I wasn't maniacal-depressive.

Just started to write a couple of jazz-metal songs.

Are you a professional musician, semi-pro, wanna-be pro, or an at-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player ? I would call myself semi-pro, as I haven't really recorded an album yet lol
Have you recorded your own compositions ?  Got samples online ? I have recorded them, and they are somewhere around the web.
What instrument(s) do you play ? Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keybaords, about to learn the flute, mandolin.
What instrument(s) do you wish you could play ? Flute, Saxophone, Violin, alot of brass instruments
Do you play Prog or another type ? I started a prog folk band with my friend. We aren't exactly prog folk, but we plan on having a Tarkus-esque album, with 5 folk songs and one 20-minute prog masterpiece
Trendsetter win!

- I think I am an t-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player, though I am in a band, but that's just for fun.
- I would love to record my own compositions, but the thing is that I seem to be unable to finish something, I guess it requires the patience I don't have.
- I play guitar for about two years, both acoustic and electric. Solo guitar attracts me much more than rythm guitar.
- I would love to play the Violin, but it requires the time I don't have and I now it's incredibly hard to play, 16 years old might be a bit too late for it.
- I mostly play prog, as it's my favourite music style. In my band we cover songs, from indie to prog.

1. rock''n'roll type guitar player (who cares if I'm pro then?)
2. Unfortunately no, I have composed a lot of things - but everytime I hook up with a potential band either they suck or don't like my music
3. Guitarzz & n00b harmonica
4. Sax, violin, better harmonica
5. Yeah I often add prog elements into my compositions

Equpiment details:
I use an Epiphone Alpin White Flying V (saving money for a new guitar though - I don't know which one yet).
For amplification I used to use a Vox Valvetronix 15w... but I moved to use a real old crunched Vintage Yamaha Hundred410 G, 250w amp and then hooked it up with my pedals. For drive I use a T-Rex Mudhoney, a Ibanez fuzz and as go for wah a cheap Behringer HellBabe. I've also got a cheap western guitar just 'cause I didn't have any money and I needed some acoustic.
And then I play a M. Hohner marine band blues harmonica.

I've been playing piano for ten years (I'm 17), and trombone for seven years. I play piano in most of my downtime and trombone for the school band. I'd like to learn guitar and percussion. I've been writing music for 8 years. I normally write through improvisation, but I've recently been exploring new methods of composing. I have (very) rough recordings of my compositions, but mainly for my own use. I play mostly rock with some classical leanings.

Hello to all

I'm new to the forum and have been spending most of my time at the Prog Lounge. I've been a guitar player for a while and have been fortunate enough to accumulate some decent equipment.

1974 Fender Stratocaster
1991 Fender Custom Shop Telecaster
2005 Gibson Les Paul Studio
1960 Gibson Melodymaker
1961 Gibson ES125
early 60s Vox Phantom VI

1949 Gibson J45
2005 Ovation Collectore model acous/elec
19?? Ovation 12 string
19?? Gibson MK35

Six of these guitars were inherited when my dad passed away in 1997. The '74 Strat was a Christmas present from my girlfriend in 1973. So, I only had to fork out cash for three of them.

1) Messing around at home player.
2) I recorded a few songs with my brother and a friend, but they are not online.
3) I play bass guitar.
4) Several, but down the line I'd like to get an acoustic guitar and a drumkit when I have the money and space.
5) I don't really play anything in particular, but when I attempt to write something it will often be proggy, metal or fusion inspired.

I played piano first, got really bored of playing the classical works, and I don't think I can really get further than I am right now due to my willingness to play the piano and the fact that I don't like how people tell me to play a specific type of music.  I go to it every day, however, to see if I can find something I like.

I played the guitar shortly after, only to quit because everyone else plays the guitar, and it got boring.

I picked up the bass a few months ago, and currently it's my favourite instrument to play, due to the diversity and the amount of improvization you can really get away with.

I do vocals as a spare thing, but I don't like my vocals.  However, I really like experimenting and improvizing with them, creating my own effect.

My equipment:

-Roland FP7
-Fender Stratocastor
-Yamaha bass (of some sort, it's a starter bass)
-Audacity, and some very basic wires to hook my crap up to :3

I'm gonna quit playing guitar too, because it's important to care about how many other people play the instrument, because it makes it boring.
I know heaps of people that play bass, I don't understand why you play an instrument so many other people play too.

To get in a band, you have to be the missing link.  I always hear "Damn, I need a bassist/drummer", but never "damn, I need a guitarist."  Plus, there's less competition in the bass lineup of "who's better" because usually you're sitting in the back unless you are also a vocalist.  To form a band, it's easier when you are that missing link, so you don't have to search for that missing link.

It becomes a competition of who's the better guitarist in the end, which turned me off from the instrument.  The bass has also offered me more freedom in my composition and playing all in all.  I don't have to follow structure unless the bass is part of the melody (which is very rare).  I can play what I want.

Sure, I can somewhat understand where you're coming from, but not totally though.
I hear of plenty of bands needing guitarist, so you must be looking in totally different places to a lot of other people then.
The guitar competition thing only becomes so when people make it so. It's really not the case in many situations. It can happen with any instrument, to the same degree.
No one says you have "follow structure" with the guitar either, if you want to play what you want, why not?
Of course, I can't change your mind about playing guitar or not, but I don't think having such a negative attitude to the instrument really made anything better.
If everyone had the attitude that they would quit if "everyone else" did something, no one would even be playing an instrument in fear of everyone potentially play it too. Fact is, there is a lot of people playing bass.
What if every drummer quit because every other drummer played drums? What will happen then?
There are some bands featuring more bassists than guitarists.

Play an instrument because you love it.
Switch to another because you love one more.
Don't quit playing one because you believe everyone else does. Because not everyone else does.
If one has enough creativity,  a guitarist can ruse above the sea of thousands of other hack guitarists and do something that not "everything else" is doing.
At the end of the day, there are probably thousands upon thousands of other bassists who have played exactly the same patterns and licks you have played anyway.

If you walked into an audition and you got asked why you play bass and you said "because guitar is boring and everyone else plays it" probably isn't going to impress the band members much.
It's just going to result in them thinking you've got a negative attitude problem.
You don't play an instrument? That's fine, but keep a positive attitude towards it anyway, because it will pay off in the end.

Iīm an "at-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player" guitarist and composer. Iīve come to the realization that my life at this stage ( Kids) donīt allow me to use the time needed for a more professional approach. Before I had kids I spend much more time practising guitar and composing music though and Iīve just recently made a myspace page with a couple of demo songs by my old death metal band Last Abide. Very amateurish when I listen to it in retrospect, but also very nostalgic. Iīve promised myself to spend more time composing again when my kids get older and I have more time. I still play and compose with a friend ( not death metal anymore though) but itīs on a hobby level only.
