Pfffffffff.

You cannot be an audiophile, and use a computer source.Dead

Of course you can, with lossless formats and a good sound card.

I have a Rega Apollo CD player as principal CD source and a Cambridge Audio DVD89 for 5.1 DVD Audio and 5.1 SACD playback, i only use the computer for music programs (Reason/Acid Pro 4) and PA samples/mp3's  .

tried playing back CD from the computer sometimes and though not bad wasn't as good as the Rega. sound from the mp3's on computer aren't bad either, but noticeable degradation in sound quality.

i have an M-Audio audiophile 2496 sound card which has four RCA connectors, two-in two-out, which connect to the tape connectors on the amplifier, but using mixed connectors  this can be done with any sound card  or amp.Smile

sharkoon 5.1 desktop surround speakers

i actually bought these by mistake in a buying frenzy last year, thinking the soundcard on my new Ankermann games/graphics PC had 5.1 surround! never mind the stereo sound isn't too bad at all for PC desktop speakers, my music computer is rigged up to my hi-fi system.

I really love the sound of my Logitech PC speakers:

Logitech X-230 (2.1, ~$50)

Logitech X-530 (5.1, ~$80)

I use the small 2.1 set at work, and the bigger 5.1 set at home for gaming, watching DVDs and listening. Together with the Creative X-Fi sound card it sounds really good, and much, much better than the price suggests.

What are your favorite budget PC speakers?
