I really love the sound of my Logitech PC speakers:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=9066 - Logitech X-230 (2.1, ~$50)
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2177,CONTENTID=9067 - http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=2177,CONTENTID=9067 - Logitech X-530 (5.1, ~$80)
I use the small 2.1 set at work, and the bigger 5.1 set at home for gaming, watching DVDs and listening. Together with the Creative X-Fi sound card it sounds really good, and much, much better than the price suggests.
What are your favorite budget PC speakers?

sharkoon 5.1 desktop surround speakers
i actually bought these by mistake in a buying frenzy last year, thinking the soundcard on my new Ankermann games/graphics PC had 5.1 surround! never mind the stereo sound isn't too bad at all for PC desktop speakers, my music computer is rigged up to my hi-fi system.

i have an M-Audio audiophile 2496 sound card which has four RCA connectors, two-in two-out, which connect to the tape connectors on the amplifier, but using mixed connectors this can be done with any sound card or amp.

At last an audiophile who uses computers as a source. How would you describe the difference between a musical CD player and a CD ripped losslessly on the computer?

I have a Rega Apollo CD player as principal CD source and a Cambridge Audio DVD89 for 5.1 DVD Audio and 5.1 SACD playback, i only use the computer for music programs (Reason/Acid Pro 4) and PA samples/mp3's .
tried playing back CD from the computer sometimes and though not bad wasn't as good as the Rega. sound from the mp3's on computer aren't bad either, but noticeable degradation in sound quality.

Pfffffffff.
You cannot be an audiophile, and use a computer source.

Of course you can, with lossless formats and a good sound card.

^ how much are they? If they don't come with a separate sub woofer then I'd doubt that they sound good at reasonable volume ... or do they have build in woofers on the back side?

If you order them from Creative's site, they're 99.90€.
Yes, they have built-in woofers. They sound very good for being computer speakers, and there's nothing wrong with the low-end I assure you!

Define it for us Mike.
Say up to £60?

You're right, at about $300 US they are not exactly the cheapest but you can spend way more and get a lot (and I mean a lot) less in the way of sound quality. But if your talking specifically about cost the best for the lowest IMO would be the Logitech X-230 at about $35 US or the Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 at around $120 US.

What about your sound card Mike, what is the exact model, and how much does it cost. Any further recommendations?

I currently have a Creative X-Fi (the smallest model for around 100 EUR) and I'm quite satisfied with it. It processes music (including CD or mp3 playback) at 24bit/96khz and sounds terrific ... although I must say that my main motivation for buying it was computer gaming, it accelerates games like CS-Source etc..
