I usually find them to be pretty even. I voted for Gates of Delirium though. I
think it takes the edge by just a little bit.

They are both great, but I have to go for Close to the Edge.

I think a lot of people on this site appreciate Relayer and in particular "Gates" for what it is - a great piece of music - but generally it isunder-valued. I read interviews where Steve Howe said it (Relayer) was under-rated and I think Alan White said if pushed, he would pick it as his best Yes work. I'd agree - he forms a thunderous rhythm section with Squire, after a ponderous start with Yes on "Tales".

Gates is a bit better for me. But only a bit. BoTh are masterpieces and along with Heart of the Sunrise are my favorite 3.

"Close To The Edge". I just don't see what everyone sees in GOD. It's good and all, but in no way would I put it on the same level as CTTE. Oh well, personal tastes...and all that.

Gates of Delerium is their best song, but in it's entirety I prefer CTTE over Relayer, mostly because of the second side of the album.

Both are very very good

What he said...but I don't believe they were simply "going through the motions" when composing "Gates". I think they were evolving kind of fitfully at this point, trying to discover a new way to make Yes music, and listening to Relayer you can hear them trying to move into new territory.

I just cannot agree that they were just going through the motions, the song is full of excitement, its like a new adventure!

I've been a Yes fan since hearing them for the first time in '72 and CTTE gets my vote over Gates. Although both are great albums, CTTE shows the pinnacle of their evolution as a band. The classic line up (Anderson, Bruford, Howe, Wakeman & White) were in top form and it shows in the range of dynamics on that album.

Gates is exciting too, but I don't sense the group grew on that one. Instead they were going through the motions by recreating earlier successes.

Like having to choose between oxygen and water. But my vote goes to CTTE.The way it all seems to come together at the end - "seasons will pass you by" is something that no other piece of music I have heard achieves. If there is a more amazing piece of music out there than CTTE, I can't wait 'till I hear it
