It's not prog-metal ... and proto-prog metal ... well, if it is then the whole NWOBHM movement is proto-prog metal.

I can't believe NO ONE is taking the first; are you kidding? I mean 'Killers' is a great album but the first is startling, brilliant and a real statement at the time. Not to mention being unquestionably the first true progmetal album, or at least protoprog metal. C'mon, people, be serious...
Fandango-- I was in England when they were still a somewhat struggling band (1980) and back in America by 1982, where they were very big on the American West Coast. 'Killers' was more respected but 'Number' became their breakthrough and more popular by 1984.

Well I love both- two absolutely peerless NWOBHM albums. I think 'Killers' owes slightly more to the direction they would take with the more punky 'Charlotte The Harlot' and 'Prowler' type songs being absent. 'Prodigal Son' is an underrated, and yes I suppose, progressive gem, and Di'anno's best vocal performance ever. I suppose I'll vote for Killers.
A shame Di'Anno seemingly went into self destruct mode soon after. His solo career seemed to have fizzled out until recently, though his newest album was slated by Classic Rock. I thought he seemed hugely likeable on 'The Early Years' DVD but digging around for more interviews revealed the amount of ambiguities in his interviews!!

back on topic, its interesting that in the ratings, Killers has 3.40, whereas the debut has 3.56 stars, yet it is 4-0 in reverse... looking at the track listings, I'm sure Killers is slightly the stronger album tho...
and I'd like to ask a question of US and European forum members who are old enough... I was 13 when killers was released, and it was very influential in the UK, then the No of the Beast was absolutely MASSIVE. Is this your recollection also, or did it take longer for the Irons to build a reputation elsewhere??

I will just say that I think it interesting that the Iron Maiden threads are allowed in the 'proto-prog' camp, but my 'Blind Guardian' poll has been moved by an Admin to the non-prog area of the site....
I'm not wanting to start an argument; all I'm saying is that there is a very thin line here....

Killers,what a great album,and also ONE of my favorites.I like the songs on the debut but the production is a little weak.
And I happen to like Paul DiAnno,his Nomad album is really good.
