I have a different view of Camel to those already expressed. I find 20 per cent of what they do to be absolute genius , forty per cent to be mediocre and forty per cent to me sounds like they are just jamming on to fill up the record. Probably they had to rely too heavily on Latimer.
Yes Genesis and Floyd have an advantage over the other prog bands because they seem to have a longer list of composers and more members capable of genius. That to me is why they are the top 3 in prog history with ELP 4th. Camel , King Crimson Tull and Mike Oldfield are part of the second tier because they rely so heavily on one member imho

I really am dissapointed and amazed I can't hear what people who love a lotta the same stuff I do see in this band.

I always loved their album covers. Sad as it may sound, it kinda sucks to love the covers and not like the band. HOHOHO. Prog-kid thing.
Well... Anyhoo. I'm not gonna stop trying.
I am going to take my yearly pilgrimage with the wife to the Dandanong Mountains(Victoria Australia) in the Spring... I get to do NOTHING for about 11-12 days but sit in the jaccuzzi and smoke cigars, listen to music for fun(not listen to it for work - which is what I do the rest of the year), wander the rainforest and generally just eat too much. I have been even known to smoke some pot when I'm down there, something that hasn't been a part of my 'regular life' since the early 80's... We got a pretty killer stereo in the cabin and I'm gonna take SnowGoose and Moon Madness and try again. I really am.
Wish me luck, and best regards to all the Camel fans. I envy you and am hoping to join you one day.

Camel should be in the big 5. They did alot more than Crimson did in the 70s. I think they write very good music, while Crimson's music doesn't quite excite me apart from In the wake of Poseidon and some of Lizard. I must say that Mirage and Snowgoose are a bit ovarrated. I think Camels first album is better than both and the late 70s stuff is underated. Nude is cool to. Here is my big 5 in order of greatness

Camel in my eyes is one of the giants of prog. I prefer them to Yes, and I enjoy Latimers extensive array of styles and cultures. The first four were fantastic, and even the transitional albums were excellent. "Song Within a Song" "The Snow Goose" and "Unevensong" are all classics. I'd say my favorite albums are Rain Dances and the more recent Rajaz. Camel still produces excellent music today. They are definately up to the caliber of giants like The Moody Blues, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, and Gentle Giant.

Maybe your missing the ability to like it. It was weird for my first listen but I liked it after that. I guess it was because no one was trying to get me to like it and I was not expecting anything.

Man... My buddy Ray Kazinski wuz trying to get me into these guys in 75'.
I've had SG and MM since they were new records.
I tried. I really did. I even got stoned out of my gourd a few times and tried to like them.
Boring. Boring. Boring. Sounds like a bunch of cats who can't cut the mustard as a fusion band.
Sorry. I'm going to try again soon. Last try approx. Oct. 2006.
Still sounded like dreadful fusion band.

I like Camel. I think it may be my favorite symphonic prog band from the 70's. I'm thinking in ordering A Live Record this christmas if there's money left from all of my mom's shopping raves. Their recent studio albums are also great. A Nod and a Wink, Rajaz, The Harbour of Tears are all excellent albums. I personally enjoy A Nod and a Wink more since it sounds very playful like music for one's childhood or something similar. Anyways, great band.

I've been on a Camel kick lately. I have Never Let Go and Breathless on order, but did get A Live Record, Coming Of Age--both are tremendous. The ones I have are Mirage, Moonmadness, Snowgoose, Rain Dances, Stationary Traveler, and A Nod And A Wink.
Now, we are traveling to Wisconsin for Christmas and plan to hit Rush Mor Records on Wednesday. Guys, if you ever go to Milwaukee, you have to go to Rush Mor. The owner is a prog nut and specializes in stocking good prog (I spent $150 there last year). I've contacted them and they do have Camel's remastered debut and Nude in stock...which I'm buying. Hoping to get a Camel DVD, too.

Don't hate them but honestly Camel works as Ativan with me, sends me to sleep.
I tried, honestly I tried to like them, bought the self toitled and Moonmadnes but both are plain boring for my taste.
I really don't like to disloike Prog bands but taste is something hard to control.

I just got a Camel cd. I got Moonmadness on a recommendation and I love it. Soon I will get Snow Goose and Mirage. After that, I don't know.

Camel is one of my favorite bands. I like everything from the first album up through Rain Dances. Of the newer ones I ilke Rajaz, The Paris Collection, and A Nod and a Wink. Melody is what I find most attractive in any music (which is a bit ironic because I have been a drummer for almost all my life). Camel's music is beautifully melodic. Peace.

Camel, in my opinion was great with Ferguson. When Sinclair came into the band it was just as good as before, it just had a different (more complex and cultured) style. I prefer Rain Dances to The Snow Goose in all honesty. It's all a matter of perspective.

Camel seems more likely, especailly when you eventually move into more avant-garde genres... I admit I still enjoy their first four albums + more recent material; but I simply don't have the desire to listen to them (even the magnificent Moonmadness) unless I have a stimulator... Like this thread; after I posted I went home and listened from Harbour of Tears onwards  |

Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)
