I agree about Hackett. I also think ELP went down-hill after their debut. It is IMO their best.

It is not right to say they went far down, but Marillion's peak was with Script. Script was the Mount Everest. There have been some Mont Blancs.... |
I know I'm gonna be so outspoken here but I have to disagree. For me, 'Brave' and 'Marbles' (full 2CD) are better than Script, not to mention 'Clutching At Straws'. But that said, 'Script' is a remarkable debut from my favourite band of all.

I agree with Pero regarding Peter Gabriel
Seems I am back at my own opinion.

Agreed, although I prefer "Red" (slightly). KC is a band that's been very good through the years. I'm not very fond of "Discipline", "Beat" and "3oapp", but their latter albums are really good. IMO.

Above mentioned albums were more commercial than first 3, but definitely inferior in any other way

I agree with you on Gabriel. His first album was more prog than other projects.
After 1 album his 3 was also OK.

Speaking of people who left Genesis:
What about Peter Gabriel?
PG 1 was his peak. Maybe for some proghead PG 4 was his peak, but PG didn't reach a lot of his fans with that album. Of course anyone would say So was his peak and commercially they are right. But was this really his best (progressive) album.
Hmm, this is becoming very subjective.....
Small link in my brain:
Fish made a masterpiece with Virgil. Anything hereafter (and I have tried) was less.

Have to disagree on Hackett. Spectral Mornings, Darktown and To Watch the Storms are all superior to Voyage.
King Crimson haven't made any album better than ITCOTCK, in my book.

Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws are both at least the equal of Script..., and IMO are better written and played than the debut.
Similarly, Ommadawn and Incantations are both better albums than Tubular Bells.
In fact, most of the classic prog bands of the 70s had relatively weak debuts, and even where this wasn't the case they generally managed to equal or improve on their debut - for example King Crimson with LTIA.

Mike Oldfiend managed to release several good albums, but IMO his peak was "Tubular Bells" and his latest works are much weaker.
I'm sure there are many other cases, but I can't remember now. |

Yes, for the big public the peak of Mike Oldfield must be Tubular Bells.
If that is true for the fans..... I don't know.
I just discovered Mike Oldfield and I like it very much. But I must say Tubular Bells is great but starts to be a bit boring, while his second album Hergest Ridge and 3th Ommadown are really great, equal to Tubular Bells if not better.
I understand that more recent work is not all that.

I agree with Steve Hackett, he wasn't able to equal Voyage of the Acolyte but he did come close with Darktown. Same with Mike Oldfeild. I don't like Godspeed You Black Emperor have been able to equal F#A#.
