There are also 8-string basses built like 8-string guitars. What those are good for are beyond me though.

I thought an 8 string had 4 pairs of strings, one tuned normally and one an octave higher, like a 12 string guitar.

I'd use something like E A E A D G B E ... but technically the first two strings would be bass strings, so this instrument would rather be a bass/guitar hybrid than a 8 string guitar.

Its all about opinion but...

Electric 6 string-Vigier Excalibur, Parker Fly mojo, any Carvin (smoothest necks Ive ever played)

Electric 7 string- Ibanez universe, Carvin 727, Dean Rusty Cooley sig

Electric 8 string- IBANEZ! and various customs

Bass 4-6- I really dig warwick

I think it's a better looking guitar, it that makes a difference; as with many things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There's always the consideration, too, that you have to bear in mind I am always correct, and therefore nobody else's opinion has any real weight.
