Should generate LOTS of debate. I've always been partial to Gibson (SG & LP) for electrics & Ovation for acoustic - of course, I'm talking 70's & earlier.

I have a friend who prefers the Fender Strat. But then he's a big Jimi fan so its OK.

the best guitar is all about personal taste and preferences, myself i find this one gets on with me best, many guitarists swear by the FENDER TELECASTER, it was one of the first solid bodied designs and they say "less is more" - whether it's the best one made is a matter of opinion BUT I LIKE IT!!

What type of guitars do you mean?
Accoustic? Electric? Semi-Accoustic? Steel? Bass? 6 string? 4 string? 12 string? Slide?
Production models? One-off models? etc...

Well my favorite production model 6 string electric is the strat! and my 1957 Japanese sunburst Squire strat. in particular. ;)

The Gibson guitars sound great (I have a Nighthawk myself) but they're not very flexible. Depending on what kind of music you're playing, a Gibson (or PRS) may simply be too limiting. Of course it may also be ideal ...

Fender Les Paul?LOL

I can't say a single guitar is best, because there are just too many styles of music and too many guitars to play them. My personal favorite, though, is a Fender Telecaster.

For recording I think I must vote for a Gibson Les Paul. Any of the real ones that wiegh a ton. The sustain on these things is wonderfull and the tone of the thing is just awsome. I think the only inflexability in these guitars is in the electronics. The original PAF pickups of course have a very distinct sound and that may somewhat be limiting. BUT those things come out man! they can be replaced by any number of configurations of any number of pickups. In the end the true measure of a guitars sound is in the unamplified tone(and the Les Paul has an awesome one) since the electronics can change on a whim.

For jumping around on a stage though Id rather have a nice cool looking lightweight SG.

For an acoustic probably something I've never played or even seen before like a Macafarri (spelling?) or some other exotic custum built thing.

Especially the 4/12 string double-neck, eh...?

Not a fan of the Fender sound, personally (except Gilmour and Trower, of course) - I much prefer the sound of a Gibson Les Paul or SG (overdriven, of course) through a valve Marshall amp.

Then again, I don't play the guitar, so what do I know...?

I do know what consitiutes bad guitar design, however...

I've tried Fenders and Gibsons and ESPs, but I'll never part with my Westone Thunder 1A. Even the 2A and later models seem somehow inferior - and it's a cheap Japanese guitar.

My bass is a Fender Katana.

And I wouldn't part with that either

I currently use a Brice HBX-406 6 string bass. Considering their only $300 new their better than I thought. However I've never played anything else so I dont know how it compares to the leading Yamaha's, etc. I have read a lot of good things about it on the net but does anyone here know how it compares to other 6 string basses?

I think both gibson and Fender is overpriced for that build quality. PRS is a great one-trick pony, and framus make some realy butifull guitars.

I guess my fav is an old korean strat-copy modded to my specs.

The acoustic Ovation has a very distinctive sound, to me it sounds very clear and warm.
I have asked many musicians about Fenders and Gibsons, remarkable that one says  the Fender Stratocaster sounds powerful and fat and the other that the Gibson Les Paul sounds powerful and fat, very subjective!
Personally I love the Gibson E175D and Gibson ES345 sound by Steve Howe (Yessongs!) and Rory Gallagher on his Fender Stratocaster.

Just an update...It's a week & a half later, still loving the Breedlove!Big smile...However, since the purchase I've also tried out some "real" Breedloves (a couple of US-made Focus models = my guitar plus another 2 grand...). I don't think they're $2,000 better than the AC25, but you can definitely sense the quality & superior workmanship...Rumor has it that another dealer near me is getting in a couple of used Collings guitars soon...Hmmm, I could sell some of my less-important organs...Exclamation

a single-coil won't ever sound really powerful and fat,
except in combination with another one, forming a humbucker.

My Fender Jazz Bass is perfect. Sure, everyone has one, but for an obvious reason: it's great. They play themselves and they've got the perfect range of sounds. Not too many options, not to few. Just right. It balances great, and it's one of the most comfortable basses to play when seated. The only
thing lacking was a two octave fingerboard, but there is now a Jazz Bass 24, with just that, a two octave fingerboard, so the problem is kind of solved.

I also have an old Ibanez ATK600. I found a new one for only about $300 dollars (list price on these were about $800-$900 in Sweden). It had been hanging in the store for ten years, hence the low price. A superb deal though, as the tone is very, very good, and the bass is fun to play. The over-all quality of the bass is excellent, something you would expect from a bass costing at least twice as much.

I enjoy fancier stuff like Warwicks, Ibanez Prestiges, Carvins and similair high end basses, but the Fender Jazz Bass will always be my favourite. Because you don't really need anything more than the Jazz Bass can give you. And even the top-of-the-line versions are affordable in comparison to the above mentioned brands. Fender invented the electric bass; they know how to do it right.

If you want to confuse peaople nothing beats a Steinberger, I'm always getting comments along the lines of:

"Wheres the top bit?" or "Why is your guitar broken?"

I'll admit I don't have one of the original carbon fibre Steinbergers, instead I've only got a Steinberger Spirit which is made using normal woods.

PRS isn't bad, but I've begun to prefer custom crafters who deliver an instrument of better quality at the same price.  Guys like Ed Reynolds, David Thomas McNaught, and even a factory direct custom crafter (hand crafted in a factory) like Carvin gives a better quality instrument than PRS.  Smith really sold out when Guitar Center started carrying his guitars.

The thing that's nice about a PRS,DTM, or ER is that it has the quality tone of a Les Paul, but it's manageable enough to play on a show for as long as you need to.

I've got an Ibanez S-something. It's been discontinued, I believe. It's got a really lightweight body and is quite thing, but has great tone! It's just excellent, but I wish it had 24 frets (it's only got 22), and a few frets are buzzy, but it's really easy to work around. Easily the best guitar I've ever played, or at least the most fitting to me.

Also, I really think those Mayones Regius "Element" guitars that are being developed to Daniel Gildenlows specifications will destroy all else!!!

Depends really. A few of my friends call Les Pauls - Les Dawsons. So clumsy and heavy. I am a classic strat and tele lover, although they can be limiting in some respects. I tried a John Petrucci Musicman - wow these guitars feel amazing.

Try James Tyler, or Tom Anderson guitars - these are the business especially if you do a lot of sessions. I don;t think I have found a guitar that does the lot yet. I suppose these guitars are probably the most versatile around. Parker Flys are great but are somewhat plasticy (carbon fibre fretboard).

Sod it, my guitar is the greatest rock guitar ever built (although it needs a fret dress) - 1989 Ibanez USA Custom Silver Snake. Check out www.myspace.com/owenrees82 to see a picture. Plays like a dream. Neck is similar to the John Petrucci Ibanez, and not as thin as the Steve Vai Jem. Its got some wear on the neck, and feels beautifully worn in.

I'm a drummer, but one 'garage band' I was in (a LONG time ago) my friend played a three-pick-up Gibson Les Paul, and then fed it through a flanger.  Now, that was a "bitchen" sound! (as we used to say in the 70s).  Nowadays, I am partial to Ibanez electric guitars, as played by Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, and (no doubt) so many others....

I have 3 favourite guitars:

The Maton Mastersound MS2000 Deluxe, the Rickenbacker R-360 and the Gibson SG 61' Reissue.

I used to think I could only get the sound I like with Gibson-style guitars (humbuckers and glued necks) but, since getting a halfway decent amp (Marshall Valvestate 100w), I've come to appreciate Fenders more. The single coil sound has more musicality and definition to my ears.

Strats and teles would be the greatest guitars ever made apart from the positioning of the volume control on strats (I always accidentally turn the volume down as I play) and the edges of the bridge plate on vintage teles (I've taken the skin off my knuckles more than once).

John did allow me to borrow his SG double neck though for a jam with Carlos Santana:

^Am I the only one who thinks the doubleneck SG is far better looking than McLaughlin's custom built doubleneck?

Ouch

Bad taste rules the Earth... (the custom built one is far too overloaded with kitsch details, while the Gibson is simple and stylish in comparison)

The SG double neck is one of the most beautiful guitars ever made, IMO

But do you agree that it is far more stylish than McLaughlin's custom built doubleneck?

I think it's a better looking guitar, it that makes a difference; as with many things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There's always the consideration, too, that you have to bear in mind I am always correct, and therefore nobody else's opinion has any real weight.

This we know...

Does an 8-string have another string below the low B or another string above the high E?

8-strings have an additional low string.

^ and what's the tuning for 8 string guitars?

I'd use something like E A E A D G B E ... but technically the first two strings would be bass strings, so this instrument would rather be a bass/guitar hybrid than a 8 string guitar.

I thought an 8 string had 4 pairs of strings, one tuned normally and one an octave higher, like a 12 string guitar.

There are also 8-string basses built like 8-string guitars. What those are good for are beyond me though.

This is my beautiful guitar.  It is my favorite for some sounds/playing.  I also like my '61 Gibson Melody Maker and I like strat's for extreme non-traditional tuning.

Warr guitars, or all touch-style guitars for that matter are also very cool but I have not yet played one.  They're so versatile!
