That may be the point. You may be a better musician. I can’t argue that. But talent isn't the only thing it takes to make it professionally. Perhaps Rutherford and Lee were more determined to make it than others. Rutherford just happened to be in the same band as musicians who were far more talented than him, so "Eehh..." to that. Rush... okay, determination probably had something to do with that, and Lee is a fine instrumentalist.

Rutherford was no slouch, watch videos of early 70s Genesis with him switching between bass (with pedals), 6-string and 12-string guitar within the same song

pretty impressive imo.
