I believe those four bands match your description: synergy, combined talent, focus, etc. Maybe they don't sound like the older bands, but that is a good thing. They are all doing something creative and unique.
Prog isn't a sound either (regarding your first sentence); prog is more a state of being. Example: Tool may have a sound that fits comfortably into the modern alt-rock/metal scene, but they are clearly at a higher level of skill, composition, songwriting, etc., and there is no doubt that they are careful and focused. After all, they take four or five years to put out one record, because they make it perfect, to the slightest details.

I find the Mars Volta pretty progressive...Radiohead not that much...neither Tool. Still my vote goes for radiohead

Absolutely Porcupine tree!!!I think their In absentia is one of the most exciting album of the last 10 years!!!I don't like too much Tool and Radiohead.......and I hate Tha mars volta

Porcupine Tree for me. Big Steven Wilson fan, a throwback to
'old school' prog leaders like Fripp. Great voice as well, his
singing is what caught my attention when I first heard In
Absentia.

I like PT best, but think that TMV is the most truly "prog" of the four.

They're all absolutely prog(except maybe Radiohead)...
I voted TMV, I like them a little more than PT.

I love them all, but i voted TMV, followd by Tool by an inch... anyway the only band from that list that i dont consider Prog is Radiohead... but i love them
