Guys are you kidding with this poll ???
Portnoy's drumming patterns are largely inspired by those of Neal Peart.
There is no drummer as inventive, technical and fast as Peart ...
and even Portnoy recognizes that Peart is better ... ;-)

Do fancy Peart though.

I used to think Peart was the new Bruford or Palmer up until Moving Pictures but nothing since has impressed me. I voted Portnoy!

I'm a fan of Dream Theater but I must admit that I think Portnoy is
just basing his syle on Peart. This can be clearly seen in the drum
solo in the Live At Budokan dvd, where the solo just sounds like a bad
version of Neil Peart's'Rythmn Method'.

I vote Portnoy even though I like Peart aswel.
I feel Portnoy is more a active part in the music he plays and I find he communicates better with the rest of the instruments. Peart on the other hand does this alot less and he is more about extreeme technical flawlessness.

Funny you should mention drum solo. I was just thinking about the comparison last night and I realized that Peart crafts his solos. Portnoy's solos, at least what I heard, seem more random and chaotic. At the end of a Peart solo, I feel like I just listened to a song. But based on what I know about him, it is no surprise. He is a very well though out, complete thinker and I have never known him to do anything half-assed. Even the song New World Man, which was just throw together to fill album space (heard this on an old Rush radio interview) has decent drums parts.

Portnoy is better technically, but Peart is fantastic too (and he writes MUCH better lyrics)

Portnoy is much flashier, but the depth of Peart's lyrics is no match to Portnoy's attempts.

Mike is as skilled as Peart I think(ok maybe Neil is a litle bit better) but he doesn't have this musicality in his playing. For example a drumm solo from Neil Peart is a part of music, a drumm solo from Portnoy is very fast and skilled drumming.

neal "the professor" peart (does anyone remember
that his initial nickname with lerxst and dirk used to
be "pratt"?) by a lightyear. both may be equally skilled
on the drumkit as of now, however, put them up
against each other (admittedly a GHASTLY thought)
and portnoy still looks like an over-motivated and
eagerly-fidgety upstart. sorry mike – good on yer'
anyway, VERY MUCH looking forward to OSI2!

Somehow I knew this was coming.....Just dont vote for NP because his older and more "experienced". Listen to Portnoy´s "Duel with the Devil" from the second Transatlantic album. And then you´ll see who´s smoother and has a better ear for music!!
Portnoy´s just better both technically and MUSICALLY!IMHO. And believe me I know, because I have listened MP every recording a thousand times....

I chose Petrucci in the other poll, but I'll take Peart here.

Reminds of the same comparison between Lifeson and Petrucci. I think Portnoy may be technically superior to Peart however, Peart is much smoother and has a better ear for the music. He manages to creates a smoothness to odd-time signatures of Lifeson and Lee's writing approach. Peart truly brings them together. Whereas Portnoy is flashy and has all the moves but he sometimes sounds a bit clunky, like he's biting off more than he can chew. But again I still really enjoy Portnoy's work just a little too complicated then it seems necessary sometimes... Peart seems to have a more balanced stance on subtlety and bombast.
