Lucky you, I wish I could, but I don't think they will ever come to
North America, and a ticket to Germany would be ridiculously expensive,
especially for a college student.

Soft Machine was much more innovative and better than Egg IMO (although
I like Egg as well). I did a poll like this several months
ago. My vote then was for Soft Machine, and my vote now is still
for Soft Machine, but I really love every Canterbury band!!!

Just replace Soft Machine with Egg and there you have the five best Canterbury bands. Hard to decide really.. maybe Caravan.
