Just replace Soft Machine with Egg and there you have the five best Canterbury bands. Hard to decide really.. maybe Caravan.

I can't decide either - they're all so closely interlinked that the poll is almost meaningless.

Soft Machine was much more innovative and better than Egg IMO (although I like Egg as well).  I did a poll like this several months ago.  My vote then was for Soft Machine, and my vote now is still for Soft Machine, but I really love every Canterbury band!!!

Lucky you, I wish I could, but I don't think they will ever come to North America, and a ticket to Germany would be ridiculously expensive, especially for a college student.

I love canterbury sound! I just wish Egg was included because I think "The Polite Force" is a masterpiece.

Hatfield and the North by far (even though they only had 2 albums). Their 1st album is probably the best 50 continuous minutes of music I've ever heard.

btw, i just found out that you can vote more than once, wtf.

can't believe Gong is being shredded to piece on this poll!

National Health is absolutely my favourite Canterbury band from this list. Hey, great, I'm going to listen to And Queues And Cures tonight, gotta do that.

It's totally a matter of taste in my case. All the other bands mentioned are very good too, but I just looooove the NH style!
