Wait? What ? Is this really true? Dear god it is!!
Listen. I’m grateful for Mangini. He did some great things with the band. My fondness memory would be his live Drum solo off the “Live in Buenos Aires” album. Good lord. Amazing. 2nd would the track “the Enigma machine.” Unbelievable stuff. Buuuuuuuuuut….. Mike Portnoy. When Portnoy was in the band I feel DT were at their best and had the most magic. Also let’s not kid ourselves about the production choices on the overall sound of Portnoy’s drums. Very powerful and organic sounding. I can’t say the same about Mangini’s. Anyway. Colour me happy on this guys. This is not a question of which Mike is better. It is about overall band/team chemistry and it is greater with Portnoy. It is what it is. Let’s just enjoy this, especially as fans. This is for the best. |

I loved "View From The Top Of The World" (with Mangini on drums).

Portnoy was one of the legs of the Dream Theater table, but not Mangini. Although he was technically impeccable, he never filled the void left by Portnoy, not so much because of a question of virtuosity, but of a sense of belonging. It always seemed to me that Mangini was filling a borrowed spot, and he did it with a lot of professionalism, respect and correctness, like his final words of thanks to the band and their fans. Hopefully this return of Portnoy will bring new airs to the band and DT will get out of the loop they are immersed in with their last albums, copying themselves over and over again. So be it. |

I hate this news ..., I don´t like Portnoy and his non-musical drumming, but it´s good for business, it is a business management decision, Dream Theater was going down on Billboard charts and record sales, so another studio album with Portnoy will get higher on charts and makes more money

Hi, In my book, I think this was coming all along ... MP was a big part of creating material in the earlier days, and he will, again, do so, I imagine. The tough part about Mangini, is that I'm not sure that he improved the music as much, and that left DT a one sided band, and the drumming for my tastes was not that great ... excellent time keeper, but is that all there is to it? But, I am pretty sure that MM knew that if MP wanted back, he had to step down. Specially as MP was so important to the marketing and the running of the band in the earlier days, something that DT might have lost with him gone. I think that someone wanted a bit more from the folks in the band, and I have a feeling that he just did not add the touch and feel that DT was hoping to get ... we'll see what happens in their next effort, but I bet it is going to be explosive! And a small triplet or touch here and there, was not enough ... you still have to decorate the music, not just follow it! We learned nothing from Carl Palmer! Or Bonzo! Or Moonie! I do not think MP is an exceptional drummer. I do think he is much more than a showman than he is a drummer, but he obviously stood up for making the music stronger, instead of just drumming the beat right through it!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hopefully this is great news, to me their last decent album was Black Clouds And Silver Linings, the last one to feature MP. What say you (other DT fans)?! 😊 |
