From those in the list, IAN Anderson. But you missed the duo Rutherford-Banks.

I donīt think Waters was an outstanding songwriter. He might have writen some curious lyrics, but his real talent to write songs is shown in The Wall and The final cut, where music was quite scarse.

John fu cking Lennon....

What the hell is wrong with you people?

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Lyrically, Roger waters would be my choice

Musically, frank Zappa would be my choice

And as a whole, Peter Hammil is definitely my choice!

But then, nobody will ever beat the Beatles! but hey! they are not prog!

Sinfield wrote lyrics, not really music. Do you mean lyricist?

Silly Who-fanatic!

Of those up there, Ian Anderson.

Of all songwriters: Maybe Bach or Tchaiovsky or Beethoven.

From the look of the thread title, I thought you meant overall greatest songwriter of all genre's. Regardless, I would have to go with Pete Townshend, hands down.

Well...there you go, Im sure I forgot some...please tell me if your fav is not here.

As for me, Ill say Waters and Hammill must be the best songwriters not only in prog but also in music in general.

"You want me to play what, Robert?"
