I'd love to meet up with you there when I get the chance. Shame my wife isn't with her old company still -- she had to travel a lot, and sometimes I'd tag along.

As for Jaws, it had an effect on me too. Luckily we don't have sharks where I live, other than some small harmless mud sharks. By best son's best friend got a pug, glad this didn't traumatise him.

Steve mentioned him already, but James Earl Jones is a glaring omission to me from this list. Not only has he been a great stage actor (which I guess being IMDB I can't expect them to be so interested in) but even in mainstream rather tacky films like Conan (I do really like the film), he shone. What a great character and one can understand the charisma and power that the character exuded. Definitely a fan of his.

I had lots of Persian friends, and a couple of them would call me the Viking sometimes. Not sure if it was the blonde hair and blue eyes, or that I would go full berserker mode sometimes.*

My parents, by the way, had a delightful time in Turkey (Turkish delight indeed).   I'd dearly love to go there, although I have always been a little worried since I watched Midnight Express when young, but then unlike that protagonist, I don't plan to traffic drugs. It is one the countries that I have most wished to visit.

* For those that don't know, "Berserkers were a special group of elite Viking warriors who went into combat without traditional armor. Instead, they wore animal pelts, typically from bears or wolves." Think of that guy in the Washington Capitol mob, if you've seen him, or any a number of films involving Vikings. I did not actually go berserk, at least not around them.

Well, you are hardly ugly, but yeah I care little now what people think. I stopped caring as much when I got married as I was an oversexed (or at least some eunuchs or those with vows of chastity would say so) individual looking for partners that I found attractive. For a while I used my picture as my avatar, but I feared that people may be doing naughty things to it. ;)

A great-grandmother of mine was half-Malaysian, not sure if here parent was even full Malaysian actually.

My dad is from an old Norman family -- got records going back over a thousand years for that family tree. It helps to make me realise just how downwardly mobile I am. Had myself DNA tested and was surprised that it said that I am 20 percent Ashkenazi Jew and 0 percent German (apparently no Nazi in this Ashkenazi -- sorry if that's an offensive joke, it's a kind of Spanish Ashkenazi according to the results).

If more people were DNA tested more would realise that they have more genetic diversity than they thought and maybe not put themselves in narrow racial/ ethnic boxes. I heard of a KKK member who had himself tested and was shocked to find that he had African DNA from a few generations back. We all apparently have African DNA. We are all African as I have seen it put, but I won't call myself black even if I were black to the core on the inside. We all bleed red.

Speaking as something of an ex-Communist (more anarcho-communism) who still has Socialist leanings, one problem with focusing so much on race when it comes to inequality is that we can lose sight of class struggles and differences. There are privileged and underprivileged of all ethnicities. Some of that comes down to the colour of your skin, also your family background, your education and job, your intelligence, your athleticism, you physical and mental health, general circumstances, your beliefs, sexual orientation, political affiliation, connections, influence, looks, affability, relatability, general disposition etc. There's lot of luck involved. We'll never, or probably never, all be equal in one sense, but I do think we should strive for reasonable equal opportunity at least so that people can fulfil more of their promise and reach more of their potential. We can't all be great physicists, basketball players, or both.

But I digress very much.

I do take some issue with the black term, as it seems you do, and I hate the term coloured. Black, brown, how black is black? I have mixed-race kids as my wife is Oriental and they take more after their mother in looks. They don't like it when people refer to them, or assume they are Asian any more than I do. They are Eurasian. My son when asked about this just said he's Canadian. I have some Malay blood even though I look Nordic.

I do wish we could become more colour-blind as a people while still recognising ethnic and cultural (including subultures) traits. That said, I have tended to be more attracted to East Asian women, so I am hardly colour-blind, but I'm still something of an equal opportunity swinger. And if my wife finally decides to leave me, Thandie, you know where to find me.

It's Asian cultural month here in Canada, and I think such things highlight our differences more. And Asia is such a big continent with such diversity that it seems kind of more silly. Race here seems to have become a much bigger issue. There's things like George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, but also every day new stories on TV about anti-Asian hate speech rants (all have been aimed at East-Asians, mostly Chinese, but they all get lumped together as Asians). My wife has never consciously experienced racism. I have had derogatory remarks made about being "white" (a term I don't like). My daughter has been called a Chink before.

A bit rantish sorry, but I get the feeling like we are now expected to see race more than ever and also by some that empathy can be seen as bad, like you don't understand or feel what it's like to be a so-called coloured person in this society. I'm a Humanist, well as Humanist as a misanthropic individual who prefers non-Human animals can be. Yes, we need to recognise systemic racism, racism, ethno-centrism, biases, unequal opportunities and all that jazz, but I would rather more focus on what can and should unite as a species instead of this seemingly increasing tribalism (the tribalism was always there and I guess it does need more exposure and it does need examination).

By the way, there was a manager who admitted to making racist remarks about Filipinos at my wife's workplace not that long ago and he was originally from the Punjab. So there is Asian vs. Asian racism too. Discrimination is a problem in many quarters, and it comes in many forms.

I used the top 23 off of a top 100 list, Elba was the 31st, unfortunately. You said Cuba Gooding Jr. is underrated. I believe he is one of the most overrated actors of all times.
