1980's 'Makin' Movies' LP featured a little tune, 'Skateaway' I have never been able to define.  'Evening paper in/Horror torn/But there's hope for later/Capricorn/Stars give her just enough/To get her home' and 'Then she reads about a swing to the right/But she's thinkin' 'bout a stranger/In the night' makes for a tuneful snack, until you get to the three-minute, instrumental conclusion.  To call it a hook does lasers an injustice.  I loved it and still do.  And this guy does this-- makes a song so highly addictive you can't wait to hear it again-- throughout his career, culminating in a biographical record, 'Shangri La' in 2004, with 'Song for Sonny Liston', 'Boom, Like That', 'Back to Tupelo', 'Stand-Up Guy', and 'Don't Crash the Ambulance' via a near-fatal motorcycle accident:

The big enchilada
Stealing elections
Had to go down there
Trash collection

Brother Knopfler started out as a journalist.  Thus lyrics are the backbone of his most effective songs.  We could think of his process as 'spellbinding', first the lyrics, then the cook.  Many do wander off progfaced, and no one can remember where they were when they heard them.  I like this quote from nowhere:

'A leading exponent of the moody rock lament...'

In my opinion should be Prog Related. "Private Investigator" is somewhat proggy

Love their Making Movies album and especially Love Over Gold - think it is much better than many prog albums, but I have never considered Dire Straits being prog. It's not because they made a 14 minute song that it becomes prog...
Actually, I've never considered Alan Parsons to be prog either, but they too have made magnificent albums.

I like DS but prog? When I saw them in New Cross in the late seventies they were a good competent band with what I thought at the height of the new wave was a retro sound. Sorry, not prof for me, I have Love over Gold though and a fine album it is.

Moved this topic to General Music Discussions as the topic does not fit the Suggest New Bands guidelines, which should include music samples, a bio, links. and in a case such as this, then a strong case for inclusion: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=122381

It has been discussed many times.  I'm not very familiar with Dire Straits, other than "Telegraph Road" (which is Proggy) and some other stuff which I wouldn't say is) but it didn't readily remind me of Alan Parsons Project or Wishbone Ash, and the best comparisons to make are to ones included in Prog categories that sound most similar and/or share personnel. If you're just going for a really general "this is as Prog as that", then that doesn't make a good case.  One thing too is that PA is not very consistent due to all of thee changes that have happened here over the years.

By the way, getting into Prog Related can take a lot of effort, and comes with its own expectations.  Helps to look at the Prog Related page and see how many of those criteria an act ticks off, and then a Special Collaborator is expected to support it and bring it to the admin team.

Here are some of the past topics on this:

Topic: Do Dire Straits Count as Prog? (this topic is still open)

So you are hardly alone in thinking that it should or might find a place in PA.  It was proposed to the Prog Related "team" back in 2011 and rejected.

Am I wrong? If Alan Parsons Project is prog, and Wishbone Ash is prog related, so is Dire Straits, no? I mean Brothers in Arms is at least prog related, if you ask me. Also Love Over Gold? That's borderline prog. I'm curious what you guys think.
