My two cents.

I never insulted anyone here
but have been really insulted here once, which led to Jean and me not
visiting this site for about a year. My Asperger syndrome (a mild form
of autism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndrome;
the part about the restrictive behavior pattern and interests is not
true for me though, and neither is it for Jean, who has this syndrome as
well, which is perhaps what attracted us to each other when we met; we
felt we finally had met a likewise soul).

I probably acquired the syndrome because I was in hospital for a long time when I was between two and three years old (which is when kids learn their communication skills). Jean probably acquired hers because as a kid she used to be stoned all the time due to all the sweet smoke in the house (her parents were hippies).

I do for example have
the odd behaviour of humming little tunes, just 3-6 notes, between
sentences. Jean on the other hand rarely looks people into the eyes when
she speaks to them; she looks over one of their shoulders as if she
sees something extremely interesting in the distance; thankfully we both
managed to no longer have these habits with each other.

Believe
me, our first meeting  was very odd (we actually had two first meetings,
but that's a complicated story. Only the second meeting was téte-à-téte
though; the first meeting was in a group).

We two are definitely an odd couple - two lesbians with Asperger syndrome and alopecia universalis.

So
if anyone ever feels affronted by me (once again, I never used a direct
insult) I apologize. Communicating is a difficult skill, especially for
me, and online it is even more difficult. I learned to interpret the
little visual and audible signs in direct communication meanwhile,
though I am definitely not as good at that as most other people. But
without these signs I am completely at bay. It is definitely not
intended.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Have a nice day, Friede.

Quite a list, eh?

I (almost) completely agree, except my list would include:
  • Asturias (Electric version)
  • Gerard
  • The Psychedelic Ensemble
  • Yuka and Chronoship
none of which deserve to be mis-classified as neo-prog, but because they are, I claim these to be THE BEST NEO-PROG bands ever!

the interesting thing is that when you have the Asperger syndrome, or shortly AS, you have the feeling that no-one understands you, although it is just the opposite: you don't understand anyone else. this resulted in both Friede and me having certain speech habits, but just on the opposite end of the scale. Friede developed the habit of speaking extremely loud out of desperation because she had the feeling no-one understood her. I on the other hand developed the habit of speaking extremely quietly out of resignation because they never understood me anyway.

interestingly we two understood each other immediately, perhaps because we did not have to look for hidden signs in the other, so by and by we got rid of our speaking habits and now talk to each other in a normal tone of voice. however, when we speak to others we fall back into our speech patterns

Actually....in all seriousness....Twelfth Night were a band who largely passed me by in the past. Never really took the time to hear them fully beyond the odd track here and there (I've got gaps everywhere in my awareness of prog bands, which is why this forum is so good). Any pointers album-wise? What are their best three, perhaps?

It has nothing to do with snobbery; I explained my reason. I have heard a lot of neo-prog; the younger of my two brothers is a big fan of it. Not my cup of tea, but it has definitely nothing to do with snobbery. You don't like Krautrock - very much your loss.
The snobbery part is taking the time to bash Neo prog every chance that you can when the subject comes up.  That you don't like it isn't an issue.  It is the feeling the need to put it down which makes you a prog snob.

You appear to be a victim of subjective perception. There are so many neo-prog discussions going on; I usually just ignore them. I said a few words about Steve Hogarth (I consider his voice to be soulless; he might as well be reciting the phone book), but that's about it. I only threw in my five pennies worth here because I simply can't think of any really good neo-prog (Marillion's "Fugazi" has its moments, but that's about it).

But maybe your perception is warped because I definitely made a few negative remarks about Rush.

I mean the sound of his kit.

Yeah, not the best. It sounds better on the live records.

What do you think of the all-instrumental Live At The Target and Fact And Fiction by Twelfth Night? With Geoff Mann at the helm, TN was far and away better than most other neo bands. Target isn't even neo. They sound like a space rock band on that.

I think Twelfth Night sit uneasily in neo-prog, though I don't really know where to place them (maybe eclectic). What I dislike about them is their drum sound (I am a drummer myself); it is in my opinion absolutely horrible. I wouldn't want my drums to sound like this at all.

Never sure if Magenta, Frost* or It Bites fitted into the genre (does it really matter?) but I enjoy much of the output from those bands too. I think with so much uncertainty about where bands fit into a genre-centric view of prog, and bands regularly pushing to new styles and content themselves from album to album - I am loath to say I dislike any genre. Always thought prog rock was a broad church (or even a temple).

Vermindung actually sounds cool, haha.

I know what "Vermin" and "Dung" means but I was unable to spot the "Vermin" in this word, simply for the reason that in the German language "Ver-" is a common prefix and "-ung" a common suffix, so I saw "Vermindung" as "Ver-mind-ung" and not as "Vermin-dung". I simply did not think of the English language when looking at "Vermindung" but of the German one since "Verbindung" is a German word (meaning "link, connection" but also "alliance"). Also there is the German word "Verminderung" meaning "reduction, decrease, diminishment". What I thought you tried to do was bring in the English word "mind" into the German language somehow, and then "Ver-mind-ung" would mean some kind of brainwashing.
