Iron Maiden. James Hetfield has sung the same song, in the same manner, with the same inflections since 1981.

Metallica introduced me to metal and rock music in general, so they get my vote.  Plus I just like them better.

Not that it matters because I enjoy Maiden more.

I see Metallica is more a metal band that had some progressive tendencies in a few of their albums. I do agree with CCVP that And Justice is the most progressive. The only thing I found ridiculous is Metallica stopped making things that they considered to be complex because they bitched about 9 minute songs being too long to play. Now some people may say well they are hitting all their instruments yard, but so were King Crimson with their crazy improvs!

Yay, someone isn't yelling at me!

Metallica influenced like every metal band ever (which includes Prog metal) and had some fantastic proggy elements in AJFO and MOP, as well as smigeons (just smigeons, mind you) in their other albums.

Metallica. And Justice for All... > Ride The Lightning > Kill 'em all > Master Of Pupets i don't care about the rest from them.

Maiden. Seventh son > Number > powerslave i don't care about the rest from them.

Metallica wins. i'm here looking at the names and probably i would put seventh above master, but that's it.

Love the two bands.
But Maiden never done something so disgusting as St. Anger.

So... UP THE IRONS!

The two what?????????????metallica  isn't prog at all..they just play thrash..

Prog Metal progenitors.  I didn't say they were prog metal themselves, I said they influenced many future prog metal bands.
I don't really agree with this too much the progmetal progenitors for me would have to be both King Crimson one of the original progressive bands that definitely was doing metal a lot in the 1970's, Rush, and Iron Maiden to some instance, but not Metallica. Also, for me Iron Maiden was better than Metallica before, and keep progressing their sound more and more while Metallica has sucked for quite some time now.

Iron Maiden < Any 80s band.

Ten years have got behind you

After about a year of listening to Iron Maiden, I got to see them live for the first time in summer of 1982. They have been one of my all time favorite metal bands since, I have had no reason to stray to the likes of Metallica or similar.....I never got into Metallica back in the day, I always saw J Hetfield as some kind of primadonna attitude.

Anyhow, to me 50% of Iron Maiden's recordings totally destroy anything Metallica has ever done.....so 100% would be down right bloody and dismembering.

Iron Maiden keeps getting better, and their live shows are some of the best concerts today.

MAIDEN. I can't get into Metallica no matter how hard I try.

People from DK tend to idolize the ones who make it big regardless of talent. I have been a Metallica fan ever since I had the upper body strength to headbang. Metallica was and still is the largest teenage boys gathering in my country and I suspect they will continue to be so in the future.
Maiden on the other hand is now gaining some of its prior glory in the youth department - and that is a welcome change to be frank.
Gonna go with Maiden for sheer consistency.

Maiden,Maiden,Maiden. The majority of Maiden's discography is absolutely classic, and they have withstood the test of time.Metallica did four good albums and haven't done anything worth a sh*t in decades.Plus Metallica claimed NWOBHM as a major influence,so why wouldn't I pick one of the leading bands in that movement?

Maiden is more fun, as Zargus wrote, but when you really need some metal in your life, it is Metallica.
