Using growls to emphasise a point can be very expressive, but growls just for their own sake just seems daft. Like making the same point over and over again. Just sounds stupid.
When using a growling voice as an instrument ALL THE TIME, it's a head-scratcher that you should use something that's even less versatile than a single bagpipe would be.
Might as well blow a comb that just has one tooth.
But then again that wouldn't sound threatening. I mean like a really mean wandering minstrel coming at you with extrremely bad breath as a weapon.

Could we quote iwrestedabearonce's Krysta Cameron? Yes, this band is not 100% metalcore, yet this genre may be their main influence.

I've been thinking, do we really need more melody in music? Melody and harmonies have taken the most important job of music for centuries. Why not an atonal sound made by the voice take the forefront?
Of course, it kind of goes with the territory. People who don't like/listen to that type of music may find this tough to believe: But all growls/screaming whatever are NOT the same.
Some I like, some I don't Depends how it's done, how fitting it is of the music, etc If done really well it can be the perfect compliment for the music

It truly is an acquired taste. Some vocals of the nature can be appropriate and superior to "clean" singing in the context while other times they can seem fairly out of place. I used to hate the vocals and in fact the first time I ever heard Mastodon I dismissed them for absolute garbage because of their singing styles. Over the years I've grown to respect the style of vocalization as much as singing. People must understand that is NOT singing, but rather an entirely different utilization of voice. There are times were the emotion, brutality, and darkness can be conveyed more thoroughly with these vocals than singing.
Some examples of bands that would be entirely different (worse) with sung vocals:
(However, it would be appropriate for Meshuggah to be instrumental or to perhaps have a second drummer. They use their singer as a percussion instrument, I kid you not, and it adds to the rhythmic insanity.)

I don't like those types of vocals at all. I've tried to expand my horizons and at least be comfortable with the Tech/Extreme sub-genre but the growls that frequently accompany the music is unbearable to me despite the hours I have tried to acquire the taste. I can't fathom how that sound is pleasant to any ears but I really don't care if other people like it. So while I would undoubtedly like the music better without the vocals, I can't imagine ever wanting to listen to such music so my vote goes to the final option.

Usualy I like death metal, not black metal only fiew bands here and there. Death metal if is sing and played from the soul , with open mind and pleasure is awesome. Doesn't bother me extrem vocals at all. Each vocalist has his own range for ex, I like Schuldiners voice , but I also like Bolt Thrower voice aswell, rough ,deep very death, and also Carcass kind of vocals, diffrent from Bolt or Death or others but still death. Anyway one of the best death vocalist I ever heard is from Disincarnate (James Murphy band) - his name is Bryan Cegon - simply amazing .
