It's the same problem with Genesis, but they are still in the archives...
Those bands you mention merely took elements of what Metallica did, and developed very narrow areas of it in a technical manner - don't get confused between technical and progressive. Metallica were progressive - PERIOD.
No, it's a bad point. Metallica were at the forefront, and "Master Of Puppets" was the very first of its kind - there was nothing like it before, or even at the time. Exodus: Concentrated on riffs. Slayer: Absolutely revolutionary, but confined to the narrow area they chose to explore - and it's a good job they did, because they were/are fantastic at what they do. "Reign in Blood" is still a benchmark that has never been surpassed - but it ain't prog! Anthrax - you're making me laugh! Kreator - don't confuse technical with progressive. Kreator were never progressive. Fabulous technical thrash though. Sodom - Sod 'em!

metallica prgressive???? come on guys!! their first album is 100%
punk/thrash and the albums that followed were thrash until black album
which is a trash. there are so many great bands missing from the
archives like coroner, mekong delta, toxik, secrecy and you are talking
about metallica?

From what I've seen so far, if a band is included, ALL of their albums are included. So no matter how "proggy" Master of Puppets and ... And Justice For All may be, it's impossible to add Metallica. 80% of their albums are not prog. It's the same problem with Queen (Only Queen II and Night at the Opera are prog) or Muse (only some of their songs are prog). |

...But not a very good one, because there is a lot more prog in Metallica than in some bands in the archives. It would have been funnier if Metallica weren't remotely progressive - but they're the most progressive metal band of all time PERIOD. |

I'm not really so sure whether Metallica should be here or not, and I absolutely have no idea bout system of a down, but IMHO you should consider adding Deep Purple before both of them. (I haven't read all the answers, sorry if I said something old!) I agree most of them who said Metallica's works from Kill'em All to Justice has prog characteristics, with the exception that Kill'em All inclines more to thrash than progmetal, and I believe Black album too has some prog capabilities As for not adding a band because it has too little proggy works: why is Genesis here then, for God's sake?!?!?!? |

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |

Metallica should not be on the Progressive rock archives. They might
have some aproach towards what is progressive rock in
one or two albums, but thats it. No more than a speed trash metal band,
that has lost all its charm in the last years.

Albuns like Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning have lots of progressive elements. If Nightwish is in this site..... Metallica should also be. |
