Topic: can't play prog without alcohol ? Posted: February 13 2007 at 17:39 |
Like most things, it's fine in moderation!
I usually have a nice cup of tea whilst listening to prog actually!

It just concerns me when I see these kinds of arguments. I used to use them too. They are called rationalizations. It makes you feel better about using something you know is actually harmful.
Sure, anything in moderation isn't going to kill you, but would you say the same thing about another drug? Would it be O.K. to have a line of coke for happy hour, smoke a little crack with the boys on Saturday night, or the occasional shot of heroin? It's really not all that different.
If addiction never sets in, then there is no problem, but the potential is high. 80% of the alcohol sold in the U.S. is consumed by 20% of the people who drink it.

"Can" is the key word. It's hardly a necessity.

I've never been a fan of binge drinking, but I always love to have a few good beers. Bring some Doppel Bock this way!

Tell that to many Buddhist monks who live into their 90s AND could kick our butts |
Thanks for backing me up.
I think the people in Southern France could live to that age without wine also.
And yes, some of those monks could kick our buts, but they would choose not to.
You should see Ven. Samu Sunim. The man in in his 70s, and blows young people away on morning jogs, and lengthy prostration sessions.

Instrumentally, I can't play prog with or without alcohol -- at least not very well. However, if I'm just playing a CD or mp3, I can do that equally well when pretty drunk or sober. As for LPs, I've scratched a few when I was off my face.
I drink in moderation these days: some wine with a meal; a beer at a pub; an occasional Scotch or brandy. When I have played music at bars, it has always been after a few drinks, but I haven't done that in years.

Why it isn't "I can play prog without alcohol"? I'd go for that one. I don't need alcohol to play prog or non-prog music, I think I may get too stoned to play with only a couple of cups. At least, by now, I don't like alcohol...

Of course it's fine in moderation, but too much can really be bad. Just like everything else.
As for prog....well I don't think you need alcohol for it. But, I have seen some people that really did play better drunk. They claimed they "thought" less, so all the music came naturally.

I never had problems with alcohol, though I never drink too much of it.
