I didn't notice any mention of Dark Side of the Moon - but I did skim read

There's also sax in Supertramp - "It's Raining Again" and "Bloody Well Right" spring to mind.

And check out Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Variations"

King Crimson - Starless

and my favourite;

Hawkwind - Golden Void the original version on Warrior on the Edge of Time. Many of the later live versions feature synth inplace of Nik Turner's original sax.

TO ROMANTIC WARRIOR:
David Sanborn is unbelievably good, I agree. Particularly like VOYEUR that strangely fitted into 1980. But the thread is Prog with Sex..[whoops, I mean Prog with SAX of course-- must be that troubling Shivaree sign off that gets a man all confused!]
Looking still the same after all these years...

inspiration huh?...

I wouldnt say prog, since most virtuous musicians are also in the jazz/fusion gamma...i would definetely go for David Sanborn on TIGHTROPE of STEVE KHAN...you cant go wrong with that, is like Al Di Meola Meets Funk Style with beautifull sax.

There's three main paths for sax: 1: Sounding like a black saxophonist(wich if you arent black having that soul would be tough) 2 : Sounding like White wank ugly noise saxophonist(Like Elektric Band of Chick Corea) 3: Original and melodic Sounding that beats sometimes first path. Spyro Gyra also has interesting saxo soprano stuff but i would rather start with something less quiet.

Stay Classy

(David Sanborn also played with bunch of musicians, such as Phill collins)...He's just amazing

ALSO Mel Collins has been mentioned but not 21st.CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND which is the band he plays with right NOW. When you consider that Ian McDonald is also in the band you can expect excellent sax playing and that is exactly what you get, esp. to some of the early KC classics which they feature.Check them out!

Once again: checked! Excellent!Thumbs Up

Oh, Yes. "Glad" is a great suggestion. One of my favorites also. But why stop there? The whole album is fantastic.

I am also going to jump on the bandwagon with VDGG, and KC.
You might also want to check out Morphine.

no wonder you two are amoung my favorite posters hahah....  check out 'Live at Santa Monica' for a killer live version of Glad.  When I think of a classic wah-sax solo... I think of that one.

Some Pink Floyd (on Dark Side and Wish You Were Here) and some Steve Hackett, especially on his live archive series, ie: Live Archive 03.

"The Sleepwalkers" by VdGG has the best sax solo ever (in prog, Coltrane is a whole different story). Also try Colosseum, especially the Valentyne Suite.

If you like to see a really great live performance you should buy the Van der Graaf Live DVD from 1971/1975. Especially in the song "Theme 1" which is quite jazzy but great, you will see David Jackson even playing two sax the same time Thumbs Up

Here is a link to the song:

S Lang is right, you may add The Alan Parsons Project to the Mel Collins' list; you should try the track 'Pipeline' from The Alan Parsons Project, the sax solo in there is not really complicated but is full of feeling, blending so beatifully with the orchestra in the background.
