Er... I'm a better singer than 90% of singers that have ever been recorded, possibly, ok maybe that's a bit far fetched, but I'm a better singer than most of the rubbish at the moment!

Actually, I've just realised this post is pointless, this thread even...?

Of course some guys are not as good as some who didn't make it. Rutherford is a good example here. He may not be the greatest bassist there ever was, but he made it as a part of a dream team in the classic Genesis line up. Like football, you need star players and team workers for a truly great whole. How many supergroups equal the sum of their parts?

Nick Mason by his own admission ain't the world's best drummer, but can you imagine how horrible the Floyd might have sounded with a more complicated drummer?

I rather like Rutherford's bass playing(this from a drummer). Have you listened to the bass line in No Reply At All? Not prog, but very groovy. Maybe it was a studio cat? I dunno. He's no Squire or Levin, but neither is Whetton....

Ego?

I won't say that I am better than anyone else at my instrument (keyboards), but I could probably give several a run for their money.

Well, ok, I could shred Tony Kaye.

I can perfectly imitate Johnny Cash' voice.

I think I'm a great vocalist.
I don't know if I can tell that I'm better than anyone because everyone have pretty diverse vocal tastes.

On keyboards, I suck compared to my heroes

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

And I smoke Ed Grimley on triangle.

Am I the only one who found that hilarious (or maybe even the only one who got that in the first place)?

I can play the intro of 'Blood on the Rooftops' much better than Hackett!
I mean with he's talent why does it sound so carppy...
  • the guitar sounds like a broomstick with strings (I know, I happen to have one myself)
  • Hackett doesn't stay in tempo (don't tell me that it's just music - music has a way of progressing somewhere but this is just foul playing)
  • there are very few dynamics (a slight diminuendo at some places)
I respect Hackett and all. He's one of my favourite guitarist but I hope that the problem is that Steve was just running out of studio time and he had no choice but to play with a second-hand guitar and half a century old strings.

Great music Steve - keep on playin'

I can also sing better than Steve Howe

Not the guy from Blue Oyster Cult.

Anyway, I play guitar better than... no one famous.

I play piano better than... no one famous, but if I practiced a lot I might get there.

Let's face it, it may sound like bragging, but it's certainly a possibility ... especially on a site like this, where so many musicians reside

Having said that, as a specialist keyboardist I am way behind any specialist keyboardist I admire ... and that's despite 21 years of playing under my belt ...

As a bassist, I am even further behind any specialist bassist that I admire ... took up the bass about 5 years ago and I think I only have enough ideas for one album before I start repeating myself ...

And as a vocalist, I stink, but I believe I'm ever so slightly better than Lee Jackson of The Nice/Refugee

BTW, Manunkind ... I think you should take up underwater keyboards ... you seem to have a real talent there!

Name one famous musician that you know that you yourself can play better than.

For myself, I know I'm a MUCH better bassist and guitarist than Mike Rutherford of Genesis.

Also a much better singer than Geddy Lee of Rush.

And where can I buy your CD?

I only ever made one album with one of my bands, and it wasn't prog, it was a sort of experimental free jazz-metal-60's pop. Think King Crimson fronted by Roy Orbison, and you'll have an idea of what we sounded like. And we had mediocre songs, but we had great musicians (including yours truly, of course). Burning Squash Junkies was the name of our selff-titled debut. It was released in the mid 80s. I think it was on 8-track. If you find it, feel free to gloat over my wasted career in music.

That may be the point. You may be a better musician. I can’t argue that. But talent isn't the only thing it takes to make it professionally. Perhaps Rutherford and Lee were more determined to make it than others.

Rutherford just happened to be in the same band as musicians who were far more talented than him, so "Eehh..." to that.

Rush... okay, determination probably had something to do with that, and Lee is a fine instrumentalist.

Rutherford was no slouch, watch videos of early 70s Genesis with him switching between bass (with pedals), 6-string and 12-string guitar within the same song

pretty impressive imo.

He's diverse, but his actual melody skills with ANY instrument were dismal.

P.S. I love long quotes.
