I am a big Metallica fan, I think they're the greatest metal band to walk the earth (even if they did rip off Floyd's Goodbye Blue Sky in Fade To Black)
I don't, however think that they should be added to prog archives. Yes, they had some proggy moments (Master of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, And Justice For All, all having epic songs, dark lyrical themes, and sound effects and stuff and being sort of concept-y albums)  but they are just a pure metal band.

I prefer "Eddie's Beard" to "Dickinson and the South" ...

But Iron Maiden have a better musical taste: Maiden have covered Jethro Tull's "Cross-Eyed Mary" (it was the B-side of The Trooper). They even mention being huge Tull fans in the liner notes of Best Of The B-Sides...

But neither Maiden nor Metallica should be in progarchives, of course...

Well we have discussed this before so i really does not want to be dragged into this discussion again...Look i am not calling you an idiot it is not a personal attack on you. It is just that i dont think it will have any purpose in bringing the discussion any further with you as we did not seem to get anywhere last time we discussed this...

You don't want to engage in discussion, yet you keep replying to my posts

You don't want to discuss this *awesome* topic, yet you post in this thread

Why?

Look i had not started the discussion really but i have already discussed this with you so i dont see the point in discussing it again...i would just like to point out that you had forgotten maiden as the first prog-metal band. And even if you think Maiden is not a proto-prog-metal band i do not care at all because of your previous statements i find it pointless to discuss with you...Bye and now SHUT UP

And if all those metallica albums you have listed you think are progressive you CLEARLY have a very strange defintion on what is progressvie...but you think radiohead is more progressive than the mars volta and also you think queen is progressive

So i leave it at that, as said before i suspect that your favourite bands suddenly become more progressive just because they are your favourite bands...

Why has this suddenly turned into an attack on me?

Please read the forum guidelines.

Feel free to dispute any point I make, but don't insult me with this bollocks.

We have been discussing this before remember  I have nothing more to say other than that i doubt your credibility

I see no reason at all why Metallica shouldn't be in the archives : "Master of Puppets" is practically THE definitive Progressive Metal album, with "And Justice for All..." taking it to the next level.

Those two albums alone out-prog many "prog metal" bands already in the archives, and without them, prog metal probably wouldn't exist.

Ahem Iron Maiden cough cough

Iron Maiden had progressive moments in songs - none of their albums are progressive.

Metallica produced 5 albums that progressed the entire metal genre, two of which are bona fide Prog Metal albums (Master..., and Justice...) - and I'd argue strongly for two others (Kill... and Ride...).

Metallica were influenced by far more bands than just Iron Maiden - indeed, the influence of Diamond Head (the original prog metal band) is strong, as is that of Metal Church, Budgie, Misfits,  Rush, Killing Joke and Bleak House.

Genesis were only prog from 1970-1975 in some people's opinions. Even if you consider them prog up to Duke, that's less than 30% of their entire output.

But the point is, Metallica were Prog.

Robert Fripp used to swirl his hair too.
