Should generate LOTS of debate. I've always been partial to Gibson (SG & LP) for electrics & Ovation for acoustic - of course, I'm talking 70's & earlier.

I have a friend who prefers the Fender Strat. But then he's a big Jimi fan so its OK.

the best guitar is all about personal taste and preferences, myself i find this one gets on with me best, many guitarists swear by the FENDER TELECASTER, it was one of the first solid bodied designs and they say "less is more" - whether it's the best one made is a matter of opinion BUT I LIKE IT!!

What type of guitars do you mean?
Accoustic? Electric? Semi-Accoustic? Steel? Bass? 6 string? 4 string? 12 string? Slide?
Production models? One-off models? etc...

Well my favorite production model 6 string electric is the strat! and my 1957 Japanese sunburst Squire strat. in particular. ;)

You can never go wrong with a gibson.

I am also a big fan of PRS.

The Gibson guitars sound great (I have a Nighthawk myself) but they're not very flexible. Depending on what kind of music you're playing, a Gibson (or PRS) may simply be too limiting. Of course it may also be ideal ...

Fender Les Paul?LOL

I can't say a single guitar is best, because there are just too many styles of music and too many guitars to play them. My personal favorite, though, is a Fender Telecaster.

For recording I think I must vote for a Gibson Les Paul. Any of the real ones that wiegh a ton. The sustain on these things is wonderfull and the tone of the thing is just awsome. I think the only inflexability in these guitars is in the electronics. The original PAF pickups of course have a very distinct sound and that may somewhat be limiting. BUT those things come out man! they can be replaced by any number of configurations of any number of pickups. In the end the true measure of a guitars sound is in the unamplified tone(and the Les Paul has an awesome one) since the electronics can change on a whim.

For jumping around on a stage though Id rather have a nice cool looking lightweight SG.

For an acoustic probably something I've never played or even seen before like a Macafarri (spelling?) or some other exotic custum built thing.

Especially the 4/12 string double-neck, eh...?

Not a fan of the Fender sound, personally (except Gilmour and Trower, of course) - I much prefer the sound of a Gibson Les Paul or SG (overdriven, of course) through a valve Marshall amp.

Then again, I don't play the guitar, so what do I know...?

I do know what consitiutes bad guitar design, however...

I've tried Fenders and Gibsons and ESPs, but I'll never part with my Westone Thunder 1A. Even the 2A and later models seem somehow inferior - and it's a cheap Japanese guitar.

My bass is a Fender Katana.

And I wouldn't part with that either
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

I currently use a Brice HBX-406 6 string bass. Considering their only $300 new their better than I thought. However I've never played anything else so I dont know how it compares to the leading Yamaha's, etc. I have read a lot of good things about it on the net but does anyone here know how it compares to other 6 string basses?
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005
