It's time to decide once and for all. Who was really the 5th Beatle? The contestants.

First off, there's no way I'm going list that many people as there's only so many hours in a day, minutes in an hour and so on...
And your list is incomplete because it left out John Woloschuk from Klaatu!

I'll go with what Paul says: If there was a fifth once the Fab Four as we knew it took shape, it was Brian.

Surely we've already decided they never existed?
But if they had, it would have been Sir George Martin. |

George Martin is the only one who qualifies.

I'm going to stick to people who made musical contributions: George Martin was invaluable to the Beatles sound and their long-lasting appeal. While Billy Preston and others made performance contributions, George Martin often played a role in the very identity of the songs. Every Lennon/McCartney song, at least Revolver and on, was, in a way, Lennon/McCartney/Martin.

Definitely George Martin...the Beatles would have sounded drastically different without his guidance and arrangement abilities...

This is silly. All you have to do is listen to the superb Beatles' Love album to know that without a doubt the 5th Beatle was Sir George Martin.

I agree that the only credible contender for so-called 5th Beatle is George Martin but I also believe his creative input and contribution diminished significantly over time as attested by Abbey Road engineer Ken Scott:
I think they actually reached the point where they didn’t even need him (George Martin) for orchestral arrangements, since they would play what they wanted the string lines to sound like on a piano and George just scored what they played. He wasn’t so much creating the arrangement as just transcribing it. Even his Orchestral film score for their contractual obligation album 'Yellow Submarine' smacks of someone left in the lurch by his previous collaborators to plug a 20 minute shortfall. BTW contrary to popular belief, only the Amp Room staff at Abbey Road wore white lab coats |
