Been a fan of them since their 3rd album or so (Bad Moon Rising), and it's been fascinating to see their growth over the years. When they moved from SST to Enigma/Blast First (a semi-major label) for Daydream Nation, I remember how surprised I was. They were the last band I expected to enter the mainstream, they were so noisy and uncommercial. At the time, I think the Replacements and Husker Du were the only punk bands I'd seen go to major labels. But boy, did Sonic Youth take that mandate and run with it. They blazed a trail that made it possible for artsy punk-inspired music to infiltrate the mainstream (Nirvana's the obvious example: Sonic Youth convinced Geffen to sign them). Sonic Youth continued to grow and refine their sound throughout the nineties, but honestly I haven't heard a lot in the last 10 years that impressed me. Which are your favorites?

I love Mesmerize and Hypnotize. After having those for a while I went and bought their debut. Disappointing. Too chaotic or something. Decided to try Toxicity anyway (actually just listened to this today). I can see why its a very highly rated album, but still not quite my thing. But I haven't listened too it that many times, so perhaps I'll grow into it. |

I know them for exactly 20 years now, and lost track of them about 10 years ago. But last year I got my self their last album which I never heard and it all came back to me. Looking at their discography now I see they don't have a weak album.
![]() I always wondered if they are progressive? Definitely not straight forward, but not progressive. Great use of keys and piano though. |

I started writing a post and then realised it's pointless - I love dozens of 90's/00's bands, varying from retro-psych to electro-pop-rock to folk to folktronica to feedbacking lo-fi indie.

I like the band Local Weather Report, its a nice break to hear them on the radio in between all the other modern music. On their best days, they are a pleasure. I also like how they use a variety of male and female vocalists and sing acapella and use spoken word vocals a lot.

If I haven't mentioned Ariel Pink yet, his records are the most addictive and satisfyingly weird things I've discovered in the last 2 years. Lo fi indie rock stuff, but oh so fantastic. I often go days listening to nothing but his albums.

If I'm reading your first post correctly, you're looking for modern rock bands that are somewhat mainstream (i.e. not too "out there"), right? I suggest A Perfect Circle, VAST, and Alice in Chains.

I first discovered them during a time when I was exploring a lot of punk/hardcore albums based on the band's name and album cover. I didn't really have a way to "look up" these bands, so I'd just go into the punk section of the store and get what looked interesting. At first, "Bad Moon Rising" was a disappointment because it was more noise than punk, but it grew on me. I remember a year or two later they came to my town in concert (at that time, Miami Florida), but I didn't go - it would have been around the EVOL or Sister album I think. As far as post-Washing Machine albums go, I can't say there is anything I've heard that's as strong as Washing Machine, but honestly, they're all pretty good. "A Thousand Leaves" is worth getting - it was the first in a series of albums that relied more on lengthy, contemplative grooves with guitar interplay rather than feedback and dissonance. That approach eventually got a little old, but it's still pretty fresh on Leaves.
