Tons of progressive rock in those albums! Underrated as hell too.

I consider them "progressive" in the literal sense, but not "progressive rock."

| Then your definition of progressive rock is silly.
To not be glib here:
Take away "The Camera Eye," and Moving Pictures is a shorter version of Counterparts.
Take away "Natural Science," and Permanent Waves is a shorter version of Test for Echo.

I've always thought of VT as a full-blown prog album; sure, it's not "progressive" on a grand epic scale like Hemispheres, but it's easily Rush's most complex album ever, complete with layers upon layers of instruments and vocals and tricky time changes you don't even know are there until you actually try to count them.
|
I'm sorry but VP being their most complex album is just silliness. The drums alone is a clear, distinct sign of a lesser technicality on the album.

I said "complex," not "technical," but I'm sure you know what you're talking about concerning the drums, as you're a drummer and I'm not and couldn't begin to understand everything that's going on drum-wise in a Rush album. We're probably operating off two different definitions of "complex." I think that Rush's classic albums are more complex "horizontally" while VT is more complex "vertically;" I think of the former as very complex in rhythm, arrangement, in the way the songs unfold in an epic fashion, etc, while I think of the latter as more complex harmonically and melodically.

And in honor of that, AH, if you name a Rush album I have to listen to right now (as I write my novel), I will name one you have to listen to right now. Deal?

Also, have you heard the new Echolyn? It's on Bandcamp.

Even better than the last time . You know you have a great album on your hands when it makes you think deep thoughts while you're listening. I have listened to Echolyn's newest; I should probably give it another spin sometime in the near future. It was very good, although I wish they would have included a larger dose of the heavy material contained in the first track. What do you think about Tai Shan, by the way?
