A Farewell to kings - Moving Pictures...

From your list early to mid 80's, I guess.

Their career seemed to be played out in chapters. 2112 closed the first chapter and IIRC Moving Pictures closed the second, not counting the live albums that actually closed those chapters.

My favorite Rush album is Presto.  The album which I consider their best is Vapor Trails.  Their longest string of masterpieces was Hemispheres to Moving Pictures, but the 80's were amazingly consistent.  And their live performances are better now than they've ever been.  All of these things make it practically impossible for me to pick one era.  They're all so good!

I know it's subjective, but to me it's frankly astonishing that anyone could consider Vapor Trails the best album they ever produced.

I'd have to agree, given the issues with the mastering as well.

My favourite "era" is everything up to Permanent Waves, never been a big fan of Moving Pictures. (Sorry Andy).

I seldom see that kind of love for what is an underrated album in the Rush canon. Its mastering is quoted as being too "hot," but cranked up on a sound system there's nothing to stop anyone from rocking out to what is a fine roster of songs from start to finish. Neil's lyrics on VT are leagues ahead of what he penned on Presto through Test For Echo, apart from some songs on Counterparts and "Driven" from T4E. The vocal melodies are sterling and the guys are musically in terrific form.

A Farewell To Kings to Moving Pictures, but I love many others as well.

Indeed you seem to have your "eras" shifted compared to the standard view of "4 studio albums = an era" (at least until Hold Your Fire)

There is something between rock and metal. It's called hard rock. Confused

Well my favourite era is from Hemispheres up to Grace. Than I absolutely Adore last two albums with slightly more metal approach.Synth period has also few great obscure gems. Presto, RtB , T4E and Counterparts they all kick ass with their rock attitude. , I start to realize the fact that each period is unique. They are really progressive because they were changing their style constantly. Well, not by chance they are my favourite band..

True story man, Vapor Trails is my least favorite Rush album. Having said that, Rush is my favorite band, and Vapor Trails is still much better than say, the best Mastadon album. Lol, I'm glad though to see so many Rush fans appreciating different aspects of their career. Presto is my favorite album as I write this, and Power Windows/Vapor Trails are tied at the moment for my least favorite Rush albums (this changes about 3 times a month). My favorite Rush is Different Stages (I know it probably doesn't really count) but it's the best in my opinion because it covers amterial from the "Classic" period of Rush (from Fly By Night to Test for Echo( Rush being the sole album from their "early" period and Vapor Trails to Clockwork Angels being their "Post Hiaus" period)). I also disagree with the way the thread starter divided the Rush eras, but If I had to choose on of his I would certainly pick the one that spans 2112 to Hemispheres. Too easy. Farewell to Kings is my favorite of that era, and most often my favorite Rush album of all time lol.

Posted By: ProgressiveMike
Date Posted: December 26 2012 at 10:40

Also I feel it is obligatory to mention that Power Windows and Vapopr Trails currently get the least time in my CD player and that I am tto pleased that Rush has decided with Clockwork Angels and to a lesser extent Snakes and Arrows to really go back to their conceptual prog. I've missed it dearly, not to say that the poppier synth driven and hard rock cuts are bad (because Rush is incapable of writing bad material, as evidenced by their complete lack of non album b-sides or studio outtakesWink.)

Progressive Mike - Yeah , funny but for me Different Stages is also my favourite live album. Contains so many overlooked songs, like T4E, Resist , Nobody's Hero ,Show Don't Tell , performance of 2112 in it's entirety, a bunch of classics. And undeniably best vocal shape of Geddy in Rush history. Eargasm !

And Vapor Trails is truly wonderful album, with so many emotional lyrics written by Peart.. He dealt with his tragedy in a wonderful way. But what ruined that longplay in the eyes of the fans is production. Propably worst ever. Apart from Norwegian Black Metal from 90`s such as Darkthrone, I've never heard album that sounds worse.  Anyway, " Ghost Rider " and " Earthshine " are propably two most emotional songs ever written by that band. For those who want to give a try to that album I strongly recomend " Bubba Skarda Remix - Vapor trails less Vapor " , it improves the sound a lot !

Ya lol I really have to give Vapor Trails a few more spins before I can truly judge it. I always find that my favorite Rush album is the one that gets the most time in my cd player. I'm thinking I'll have a Power Windows/Vapor Trails-athon this week. Probobably watch A Show Of Hands and Rush In Rio to really give those albums the edge. I didn't appreciate Hold Your Fire, for instance, until the first time I heard A Show Of Hands. When you hear, or better yet see the tracks live, it goes a long way.

Hah Mike , Hold Your Fire contains my favourite Live Rush song ever, and it is " Force Ten " . Badass bass by Geddy..  Actually that longplay is too soft and poppy, but it has some outstanding lyrics ( " We pay a great price for our vision of paradise.. ) and moments . ( Lock And Key - One of the most overlooked songs ever ) . And well, Power Windows is indeed a great album but has some lower points such as "Emotion Detector" and " Middletown Dreams", they are not bad, but they could have been better . But I think it's a matter of time to get use to SynthSound that Rush presented on that era. Sometimes it sounds like New Romantic songs, but well, it was Geddy main inspiration I assume haha :)

I had a great time with Rush In Rio week ago, what a show it was ! Check the behaviour of the Brazilian fans during 2112. They are maniacal fanatics ! One of their best sets ever.  Gorgeous performance of " The Pass " , " Natural Science " " Red Sector A "  ...

Rush are one of my favourite bands, ever since I first saw them live way back in 1977 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

Kinda grown up with them through their different stages Wink

I guess the period from around '76 thru to '87 stands out with some of my fave Rush albums including 2112, AFTK, PeW and MP.

In terms of actual song writing, I do like the 80s from MP to HYF. I know this was the synth era, but their were some really good catchy songs during this period IMO.

However, there are always enough good songs on each release , none more so than the latest one CA

the recent rush tour must have been a god-send for you 80s fans.  i enjoyed hearing all the power windows stuff.  playing most of clockwork angels with the strings was a real buzz kill for me though.  time machine tour was just amazing.

alas, my favorite era is Farewell to Kings through Moving Pictures.  that being said, i like every album because geddy lee, neil, and alex are on them!!

Well, of course that I like 80`s era, but as a person that live in Europe, I've never had a chance to catch Rush live because they are not touring that part of the world too often. And since I am going to see Rush in July 2013 I had hoped  that they would play more 'evergreens ' . Because you know, it's great to hear rare gems such as " Middletown Dreams " , " Territories " , " Body Electric " , " Where's My Thing ' , " The Analog Kid "  Grand Designs " , " Bravado " or " Manhattan Project " for people who already have seen Rush for quite few times.  But to be honest, I would prefer to hear more classics like  " Xanadu " , " Limelight " , "Red Barchetta " , " A Passage To Bangkok " " Closer To The Heart " "Freewill " , " Natural Science " " Circumstances " etc for my first show. But anyway, I hope that my first meeting with boys will be great. And I cross my fingers for R40 Tour including brilliant setlist !

You could include Caress of Steel in the "proggy" era as well, since it was their first full-blown progressive rock album.

Just for fun, here's how I would divide them if I was going to be really picky:

Rush - FBN:  Hard rock era/"Finding their way"
Caress - 2112:  Hard rock/metal + prog
AFTK - Hemispheres:  Full-blown progressive rock
PW - MP:  More song-based, accessible prog; a refinement of the previous era
Signals - p/g:  semi-progressive rock, less aggressive and more textured
PW - HYF:  More keyboard driven, thoughtful prog related arena rock
Presto - RYB:  Pop rock with mature songwriting, rhythm and groove
Counterparts - T4E:  Alternative rock
VT - Snakes:  Complex, layered song-based progressive hard rock
CA:  Straight-ahead hard rock with progressive touches

no argument there.  i'd love to hear those tunes as well.  add in entre nous and it'd be utterly amazing.  i did enjoy seeing where's my thing.  love that instrumental next to yyz.  r40 would be fun.  maybe some medley of old tunes like last time.

Follow up post to when I talked poorly of Vapor Trails. I spun it today in the store and really enjoyed it. Now, I spun it after having to listen to Astronautilis and Tool, and next to that I might even think that Carly Rae Jepsen's Kiss was a masterpiece. But I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to never having Vapor Trails listed as my least favorite Rush album again. Rush is somewhat infaliable to me though lol.

I've always thought of VT as a full-blown prog album;  sure, it's not "progressive" on a grand epic scale like Hemispheres, but it's easily Rush's most complex album ever, complete with layers upon layers of instruments and vocals and tricky time changes you don't even know are there until you actually try to count them.

I'm sorry but VP being their most complex album is just silliness.
The drums alone is a clear, distinct sign of a lesser technicality on the album.

I said "complex," not "technical," but I'm sure you know what you're talking about concerning the drums, as you're a drummer and I'm not and couldn't begin to understand everything that's going on drum-wise in a Rush album.

We're probably operating off two different definitions of "complex."  I think that Rush's classic albums are more complex "horizontally" while VT is more complex "vertically;" I think of the former as very complex in rhythm, arrangement, in the way the songs unfold in an epic fashion, etc, while I think of the latter as more complex harmonically and melodically.

Even better than the last time Big smile.  You know you have a great album on your hands when it makes you think deep thoughts while you're listening.

I have listened to Echolyn's newest; I should probably give it another spin sometime in the near future.  It was very good, although I wish they would have included a larger dose of the heavy material contained in the first track.

What do you think about Tai Shan, by the way?

I think it's an excellent song on it's own, but that it didn't fit on the album that well.  It takes the momentum away a bit, in my opinion, and I think HYF would have flowed better if they just went straight from Turn the Page into High Water.  To me, Tai Shan sounds more like a standalone single, or maybe it would just have been better placed somewhere else on the album.

The drums alone is a clear, distinct sign of a lesser technicality on the album.

listen to Alex's guitar tone on "Freeze" it's insane I love it

I define the eras somewhat differently.  Rush had a pattern of three studio releases followed by a live album up until the 90's.

Because I grew up in the 80's, my favorite period is the period covered by "A Show of Hands."  Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire.

I realize that this period was a bit of a departure for Rush.  But it is interesting as Rush makes their comeback with the Clockwork Angels tour that this period is most heavily represented.

It's true that Rush lost their metal edge during the 80's.  But what they gained is also significant.  The glorious synth melodies, the highlighting of Geddy Lee's vocal talent, the poetic and socially-conscious lyrics, and the widening of the rhythmic palette all make this period of Rush the most fascinating for me.

This was supposed to be music of the future, high-tech and foward-looking.  It is telling that after the 80's, all rock music has been defined in retro terms.  What does it throw back to?  In the 80's Rush was not throwing back to anything, and it still sounds like music of the future.

Yeah, my favorites are spread out across the eras.  Caress of Steel from the early era.  Hemispheres and AFTK from the middle period.  Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows from the mid 80's.  The much-maligned Presto from the late 80's.  Counterparts from the early 90's.

There are six Rush albums which I consider masterpieces:

Hemispheres
Permanent Waves
Moving Pictures
Grace
Presto
Vapor Trails

Three of those land in the AFTK-MP period, which makes it the best (in my analysis), I suppose; but they've been so consistent throughout their whole career, and I often enjoy their 80's and 90's material even more than the 70's stuff.  And hey, Vapor Trails almost counts for three masterpieces by itself.  So brilliant.

Pretty much the period between Fly By Night and Signals. Not a duffer in the lot, except maybe A Farewell To Kings, but even that has something ("Xanadu", "Closer To The Heart", "Cinderella Man").

I can't say I'm particularly fond of Presto or Vapor Trails, but I didn't like the direction the band was going in with Presto. Only with Counterparts did the band seem to rejuvenated. My favorite albums are as follows:

Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
Signals
Grace Under Pressure
Power Windows

With the exception of Test for Echo, I love every Rush album for some reason or another. If I had to pick an era, I'd choose Caress of Steel through Hemispheres. I think they did their best heavy work on these albums, and Geddy's voice is quite awesome during this period. Their 80's work was quite good in a different manner. Their work from 2000 on is considerably better than any other band founded in the 60's from the same era. It's even comparable to their earlier work.

This is such a difficult question.

Signals is incredible. Contrary to popular legend, Alex's guitar has plenty of bite. Gedd gets his best bass tone ever, Neil's kit sounds utterly amazing and those analog synths make it my favorite Rush album. Hey, the vocals are badass, too! Wink

To me, Presto was both the culmination of the 80's era and the beginning of the 90's era. I consider it one of their most mature, tasteful works, though I can understand why you wouldn't like it as it's less "progressive" and complex then the rest of their catalog up to that point.  I agree that Counterparts was an excellent album, though, definitely a step up from Roll the Bones, which I enjoy but is really just a not-as-good version of Presto.

Alright - I love everything about Caress - but I never got into 2112 !!! The debut was very embryonic and derivative, with Fly By Night heading in the right direction.  Signals and Grace were fairly decent, but then afterwards their albums only had some good tracks for me.  I stopped with Rush around Counterparts............Am I missing out on something ???

^You're missing out on their best album, Vapor Trails.  The rest of their post-Counterparts material is quite good as well; Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels were both very solid, and it's been a while since I've listened to Test for Echo but I remember it as a good album (it has "Driven" and "Time and Motion," after all!"

That's all well and good, but at the time of release, when I heard that, my respect for Rupert Hine and Rush went out the window - I was truly in shock, regardless of their intentions - rap and Rush just don't sit well with me at all....................

That one doesn't do much for me, though in the piece's defense, it's nowhere near as heinous as its detractors make it out to be. Come to think of it, I don't think Rush ever made a truly terrible number from their 1975 - 1982 period.

Caress of Steel < - - - > Permanent Waves

I am just a sucker for the long-form piece - be it 'Fountain of Lamneth' or 'Natural Science'

Once there are four separate songs on each side of the album and no one larger composition - we lose something that only a few groups can really pull off - of course they free to grow and change - and remain a top live group in any genre.

Mid 80's to late 80's

That's not to say I don't like mateiral from other eras (I do) but I tend to gravitate toward Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure, Hold Your Fire, and Presto albums.

The exception to the statement above is Clockwork Angels which I think is among the best music they've ever produced.  Not only are the songs good but Alex's solos (especially on The Garden) are killer.
