Alquin. Focus and Supersister also have a place in my national top 5. I only wonder what Shocking Blue and The Cats are doing in a list of prog related bands...

Shocking Blue are a Psychedelic Rock band and Psychedelic Rock is listed as one of the many sub-genres of Prog-Rock on the main page of Prog Archives. Smile
 
I included The Cats on the grounds that they're a Psychedelic Pop band, although admittedly, it might be a bit of a stretch to call them "Prog-related" Wink

Shocking Blue definitely has psychedelic pop/rock qualities, but unless one considers most everything musically psychedelic to be prog-related, which one could, I would only loosely think of it as prog-related (to me saying something has some prog relation is not the same as saying it should be considerable for the Prog Related category). We have a Psych Rock category, but of course that's Progressive Psych Rock, and it's the progressive bit that tends t be important for inclusion. Hey, maybe it should be included as an Indo-Prog/ Raga Rock Related band?

Wow, just found out that Nirvana did a cover of "love buzz." I never heard that song before but I never would have guessed Nirvana(the US band not the UK psych band)did a cover of a Shocking Blue song.

Yes, this is one of my favourite bits of pub quiz type trivia: What do Nirvana and Bananarama have in common? [Both covered a Dutch psych-beat group.] 

Love Shocking Blue's originals for both those tracks.

If you ever want to play a practical joke on someone(of the "who's on first" variety)then try this. Ask them to guess the name of this band. When they say they don't know then say it's Nirvana. They will probably say "well, the original version is Nirvana" but what's the name of this band? You then say Nirvana. You will probably go around in circles for a  while until they finally figure out that the "cover band" is also called Nirvana. LOL

not familiar with a lot of them but Focus is a top tier prog band --and Hamburger Concerto is their masterpiece.
Ackerman and Van Leer are first rate players....but recent Focus not my thing.

It's between Kayak and Focus for me and the former wins. I find Focus perhaps too much 'fusion' orientated at times while Kayak stick only to a song based approacj. Their first 4 albums are certainly their best and, although they had a dip around about 1978 when they started chasing the US scene, they pulled it back with the excellent 1983 Merlin album. After a long hiatus they put out some solid albums in the late 90's onwards. I enjoyed their most recent album (Seventeen) a lot and it shows that they are still going strong. Looking forward to seeing them in support of The Flower Kings in London in December.

Their second album Kayak II is their best imo .

They did get a bit lame from about 78-82 and then there are the more recent 'Prog Opera' albums (Merlin, Nostradamus and Cleopatra) that will always divide opinion!
