I had to cut out some possible choices because of the limit to 25.
Vangelis is only prog-related. My intention with this post is to restart the discussion and get in touch with Vangelis fans. My choice is Heaven and Hell followed closely by Albedo 0.31

He has put out a lot of albums. Those two you mention are my favorites for certain. I think if those were his only two, he wouldn't be in prog related.

I won't say what his best is, but I vote for Hypothesis. That, Dragon and others are Progressive albums as far as I'm concerned.

Blade Runner always owns my heart. I've barely listened to mroe than six or so (Heaven and Hell included, and Blade Runner owns me.

Batty's monologue is one of the greatest things ever, and Rutger Hauer improvised it.... I have to confess that I started exploring his music after Blade Runner

El Greco for me his finest 80 minutes. Absolutely awesome, but so is HAH, China, Spiral, Opera Sauvage plus many more. I am perplexed he is in prog related, not that it bothers me.

I've got El Greco, but it never clicked with me. And I no longer care where a worthy artist if placed around here even though some placements leave me scratching my head sometimes. |

Dragon for me... the title track is a little too repetitive though. The other ones are great. |

China is also pretty close and probably Vangelis best all round work.
Direct is my favourite electronic prog album by Vangelis just edging out Albedo and Spiral
Found this absolutely stunning footage browsing on you tube

^ I did try to find out by reading the strange and varied comments from people on you tube but nothing of any use other than the clip was taken from a Spanish tv programme.
It is quite amazing stuff. Edited by richardh - August 16 2010 at 16:43 |

^ Hah, that beauty from Oceanic bound to get you to sleep. Even though I consider El Greco to be his last " studio" release, I always think that " Oceanic" was his last legit concept album. I have the latest Mythodea and Alexander but would love to see a new conceptual release from him again. I guess he must be getting on a bit now.

I really enjoyed his work for Antarctica and the movie as well. Also, very jealous of his keyboard collection.

A very magical period for Vangelis were the RCA years. I enjoyed his film score for "The Bounty". Excerpts are available on a best of....(forget title), and never been officially released in it's entirety.....not to my knowledge.
Two scores in particular that I must praise are Ignacio and L'Apocalypse des Animaux. These are really grand from start to finish. Many of the keyboard sounds and the approach stylistically reminds me of early Popol Vuh.
Soil Festivities is a departure from his other titles regarding the sounds and the atomospheric soundscape he creates. It's an album that has to grow on you over a few months of listening time.
1492 being one of my favorites as I never want it to end. See You Later ....I was never fond of. I am not a huge fan of Jon Anderson. Jon and Vangelis titles I had a difficult time relating to. He recorded something with Neuronium. I've never heard it. Have you? |

Hypothesis and Dragon are also very fine but the best is Blade Runnist (sic!).
