 Topic: Is the use of the term "overrated" overra

Ever find that the use of the term "overrated" in regards to a group or album usually is an attempt by the person to say that they "hate" said group or album, without actually saying so ?

Criticizing people for overusing "overrated" is totally overrated. 
I am definately one who uses the word a lot (my friends tease me about it all the time, but they're so overrated) but my meaning switches depending on the subject. Usually it means that it doesn't deserve the credit it gets, but I still like it.

There are lots of bands or albums that I like, but also find overrated. Usually it's an album that most reviewers label 'a masterpiece', but I think it's just 'pretty good'. It has nothing to do with hating anything, it just depends on the situation. I can see how you would think that though, because some of the reviews lean that way.

I can't get over your overreaction to the use of the word overrated. Get over it already ...  That & the use of the word fanboy. Do fanmen exist ? fangals, fanwomen ? I've heard of fan dancers, fan dangos, & fan-atic (though I never found one upstairs there). Or dissonant ? WHy not datsonnant ? Avant-Garde ? Who's bringing up the rear ? Do you find Avant-Garde hard on your (r)ear ? You best not use the word best ! And why doesn't the whole world spell favourite with a "U" ? That's my favourite way to spell ! Did it go missing when it crossed the U.S. border ? And if you cross a U.S. border collie with a , with a, with a .... dang, I can't think of anything !!!!

this post is overrated my problem with the word "overrated" is that one can't always determine what the sayer means, it could mean that they enjoy it but not as much as others, or it could be an indirect way of saying "you're bad for liking this". However, daily usage almost guarantees extra indie points

When I feel that something is considerered by people to be better than it actually is, I say it is overrated. I don't use it in any other circumstance. This is pretty straightforward.

OK, how's this for an explanation? Since 1975, how many times do
you think something from the album "Wish you were Here" by Pink Floyd
was played on mainsteam radio? Let's say 1 million times for the
sake of it. How many times was something from Strawbs Ghosts
(1975) played? Let's say 1000 times for the sake of it?
Even if you think the Floyd album is way better than the Strawbs album,
which it ain't even better to begin with, you'd be hard pressed to say
that it's 1000 times better. Sure sales figures factor into it,
but I'd venture to say that the sales gap would have been alot smaller
if Strawbs had been given their just attention. Therefore, ipso
facto, WYWH is overrated. Ghosts is underrated. Mainstream
radio, even in the 70s, was in the business of focusing on a
ridiculously small percentage of the output. Notice I chose two
albums that were basically released worldwide, so you couldn't use the
import vs domestic argument.

Well you also happened to pick what in my opinion is one of the most overrated albums of all time. But anyway, I totally agree. the ratio of how good they are and how well they are rated worldwide is terriblly skewed. That's why I have no problem saying that something is overrated because it's not the masterpiece it's always perceived to be. It's not always insulting, just a statement of opinion.
