For something different, this week’s theme is the Guilty Pleasure.

For this poll, we’ll define a guilty pleasure as follows:

A piece of music that you enjoy despite feeling that it may not be generally held in high regard or seen as weird/unusual.

Some of you may think you have nothing to be guilty about and your taste is impeccable. Then you are lying to yourself. Dig deep and find your guilty pleasure. There is no shame. Think of this group as a safe place (actually, I can’t promise that…).

Doesn’t have to be a popular song, but it could be (pull out the Beyonce if you so are inclined, I am sure Queen Bey wouldn’t mind being mentioned on prog rock forum). It could be a genre or an artist you might feel a bit sheepish about (novelty songs, hair metal, William Shatner, David Hasselhoff, …). We’ll be flexible around here.

Some basic rules:

1. Artist must not be on the PA database.

2. Must be a piece of music you like.

3. We’ll try Mickey’s suggestion and you can nominate a piece and include alternatives if you want. You must at least nominate an initial song to reserve a slot on the poll. I’ll put in your screen name in until nominations are final.

4. Nominating will be kept open until end of day Friday July 3. Edit your original post to finalize your nomination. If it is unchanged, I’ll put in the song that is there.

Link to playlist with nominated videos:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-zzvl_w6Fx4lXiWIkGvPwQCourjfAKIq

5. Voting starts when I get all selections in the poll on Saturday July 4 and goes until whenever.

6. Vote for up to three selections not your own. If you really think other people should be guilty and the only worthy selection is yours, I have a place for you in the poll, and if you didn’t nominate and don't want to vote for anyone’s selection, I also have a place for you in the poll.

7. Have fun!

Participation in this poll may mean that you are DAMNED! (Cue segue into a bonus video just for Mickey since we didn’t have any music videos with explosions last time.)

Donna Lewis – I Love You Always Forever

I feel like this is the audio equivalent of the demolition man going home to a warm cup of herbal tea and watching a romcom. My backstory is that in ‘96 when this song came out, I was working in a small office (enclosed space) with a few other people. We all liked having music on as we worked but our tastes were varied. Sometimes we all had our headphones on but other times, the radio. Well, somehow, we got into a routine that whenever this song came on, it became the office ‘jam’. We would break to sing along, move around, what have you. Good times. Along the way it earwormed into me, and I ended up liking it. So much so, that when I later married and then divorced, I somehow ended up with my ex-wife’s copy of the CD. I still listen to that song.

My extra guilty pleasure is novelty music, specifically covers of rock songs done in unusual ways such as my extra Metalachi song from last week. I had planned on Dread Zeppelin as my extra for this week, but that changed last week when someone decided to post the exact song I was thinking of. Most people like a novelty as a one-time deal with some wry amusement, but I can listen to on end. This one I have been playing on and off for a good part of the past year. It’s a lot of fun.

Bullhorns – Thunderstruck

And I’ll admit, through my Amazon music account, I now have a playlist of over 60 different cover versions of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck that I can listen to on shuffle play all day long. Yeah, I’m weird.

far out man!!!  I'll go with 3 myself...  if anyone dislikes them particularly.. I likely choose that one!!!  hahah. If no one vomits.. I'll just choose one for the voting option.

no surprise to most..  I love this band.. few here do LOL then again.. what do they know about 'fun' man..

2nd..  few know of my love of her... but one of the best and most treasured of PA's friendships that became a real life friendship started over our mutual admiration of her..

and perhaps my guiltiest of pleasures..  southern gospel music..  I don't believe in that Christian mumbo jumbo myself... but what it is for me is very spiritual.. and put together Gram, Emmylou and ... ohhh.. LINDA.. and it is pleasurably pure musical guilt

I don't really believe in the whole "guilty pleasure" thing. However, this particular song (which I have always loved) might sound rather out of character to some people:

I like this one, too.
Great song, I also heard two metal covers of it. LOL

Love these guys. One of the first rock concerts I went to was this weird festival in which the bands, in order, were R.E.M., Berlin, Ratt, Huey Lewis and the News, and the Cars. It was a one day show, and Ratt was playing in the middle of the afternoon, clearly hungover, and talking about banging groupies between songs. It seemed like most of the crowd was there for Huey Lewis, so it wasn't going over well. The loudest applause during Ratt's set was when, in a Spinal Tap-ish moment, Huey Lewis's helicopter came down next to the stage.

Fascinating. I'm thinking about it and have already one candidate, but not yet agreed with myself on that one.

A remark:
Quote
A piece of music that you enjoy despite feeling that it may not be generally held in high regard or seen as weird/unusual.
I could easily find something of that kind, but would never feel guilty about it. I may interpret your game this way and ultimately nominate something of this kind, however the real challenge is to nominate something about which I feel properly guilty because it goes against my own values. As I said, I have an idea, but the issue with that one are the German language lyrics, which therefore hardly anyone else will get...

Another one from the Eighties, when I used to hang out with a bunch of metal fans, and implying you liked something like that was a huge no-noLOL:

Ok.  There's a theme here.  I hope I can be forgiven. From 1967, 1970 and 1967, respectively.  And the first is my (ab)nomination, the other two are alternatives for the theme.
The Monkees ~ "Shades of Gray"
Michael Nesmith & the First National Band ~ "Joanne"
The Stone Poneys ~ "Different Drum"

I might be spared then, because of The Stone Poneys, I'm guessing.

This is my nomination. Exclamation

Here comes the first song I've shared from my country, Turkey.

I honestly think I don't have a real guilty pleasure related to the arts. I must have shared or I can share anything I like notwithstanding how absurd it might seem.

Closest to being a guilty pleasure can be this Islamic religious song, as I'm an open atheist. It is about divine love, and its translation is "Come and See Me", and its complete name is like "Come and See What (divine) Love Has Done to Me". As I said this is not an actual guilty pleasure, since I mentioned that I love this tune in various places and to more than several people I know.

I could've picked a ridiculous song too, but this comes closest to the criterion for me, here.

Eyüp Hamiş - Gel Gör Beni (The performer is Eyüp Hamiş, but this religious song belongs to Yunus Emre and has lyrics. I love this both as instrumental and with vocals & lyrics, yet this instrumental version is the best I've found on Youtube.)

I do not consider Ratt a guilty pleasure.

I got laughed at for listening to bands like Foreigner, Depeche Mode, a-ha, Bon Jovi, U2. I like a ton of songs from these bands. Big smile Also for listening to metal with the line "you listen to those people that scream?".
