Topic: Top Prog Metal band EXCEPT DT Posted: June 29 2005 at 08:11 |
This is the second version of my prog metal poll, this time I added much more bands ... hopefully you'll find your favorite band,
APART FROM DREAM THEATER!
If you think that Dream Theater is the best prog metal band, please vote for the second best band instead (or one of the "protest" options).

I think I forgot Rush ... but I was rather going for bands that had their peak in the 90s. I recently bought 2112, my first Rush album. I think it's great!
It's sad that you don't know many bands from that list ...

The most important and lesser known of these choices are IMO Heaven's Cry and Adagio, it's a shame that these two aren't in the archives when bands like Nightwish are ...

It's very tight but I go for PoS, closely followed by Threshold, then Shadow Gallery, then Symphony X... all of whom I enjoy. I also enjoy Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Evergrey & Queensryche, having every album by every one of these groups....
I noticed you didn't include 'Poverty's No Crime', Mike; a good German band, but do you consider them a bit 'light' for this poll?
Personally, I would have considered 'Royal Hunt' more mainstream heavy AOR than prog.. would you agree?

yea... too many to choose from. i think i chose opeth cuz i'm listening to them right now, so i guess that means something. I'm not too keen on queensryche, tho im sure theyll get alot of votes. symphony x and ayreon sound too damn much like DT to me. voivod and meshuggah are both awesome but i dont know their stuff as well.
...but opeth kicks ass.

Thanks for voting!
Poverty's No Crime: I think they are good, but as there are only 25 options allowed, I had to draw the line somewhere. Beyond Twilight, Aghora, Pagan's Mind, Fantomas, Andromeda, Spiral Architect, Cynic, Kamelot, ... all these are fine prog metal bands, too.
Royal Hunt: I like them very much, but I see your point. Their older albums (Moving Target, Paradox) certainly were more progressive (more like old Threshold), and their current albums are very AORish. They still have many prog elements hidden below their big rock vocal arrangements.

I know, it's the agony of choice ... but in the other poll people complained that there were too few options
IMO Symphony X only sound like DT only during small passages of some of their songs, and Ayreon don't sound like DT at all (The Human Equation of course does sound more like them because of LaBrie).

Maybe we should create a poll "Petition to increase poll option count to 50"
I like Mudvayne and Fear Factory, but I think they're far less progressive than Meshuggah.

That's interesting. I was actually surprised that Ayreon was listed as Prog Metal here. I would have put them somwhere between Symphonic Prog and Space Rock. Some of the Ayreon material is clearly metal (Universal Migrator), but most of the other stuff is "just" prog rock with a more heavy guitar tone and metal guitar solos.
