This is the second version of my prog metal poll, this time I added much more bands ... hopefully you'll find your favorite band,
APART FROM DREAM THEATER!
If you think that Dream Theater is the best prog metal band, please vote for the second best band instead (or one of the "protest" options).

I think I forgot Rush ... but I was rather going for bands that had their peak in the 90s. I recently bought 2112, my first Rush album. I think it's great!
It's sad that you don't know many bands from that list ...

The most important and lesser known of these choices are IMO Heaven's Cry and Adagio, it's a shame that these two aren't in the archives when bands like Nightwish are ...

It's very tight but I go for PoS, closely followed by Threshold, then Shadow Gallery, then Symphony X... all of whom I enjoy. I also enjoy Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Evergrey & Queensryche, having every album by every one of these groups....
I noticed you didn't include 'Poverty's No Crime', Mike; a good German band, but do you consider them a bit 'light' for this poll?
Personally, I would have considered 'Royal Hunt' more mainstream heavy AOR than prog.. would you agree?

I'm not too keen on queensryche, tho im sure theyll get alot of votes. symphony x and ayreon sound too damn much like DT to me. voivod and meshuggah are both awesome but i dont know their stuff as well.

Thanks for voting!
Poverty's No Crime: I think they are good, but as there are only 25 options allowed, I had to draw the line somewhere. Beyond Twilight, Aghora, Pagan's Mind, Fantomas, Andromeda, Spiral Architect, Cynic, Kamelot, ... all these are fine prog metal bands, too.
Royal Hunt: I like them very much, but I see your point. Their older albums (Moving Target, Paradox) certainly were more progressive (more like old Threshold), and their current albums are very AORish. They still have many prog elements hidden below their big rock vocal arrangements.

I know, it's the agony of choice ... but in the other poll people complained that there were too few options
IMO Symphony X only sound like DT only during small passages of some of their songs, and Ayreon don't sound like DT at all (The Human Equation of course does sound more like them because of LaBrie).

Maybe we should create a poll "Petition to increase poll option count to 50"
I like Mudvayne and Fear Factory, but I think they're far less progressive than Meshuggah.

That's interesting. I was actually surprised that Ayreon was listed as Prog Metal here. I would have put them somwhere between Symphonic Prog and Space Rock. Some of the Ayreon material is clearly metal (Universal Migrator), but most of the other stuff is "just" prog rock with a more heavy guitar tone and metal guitar solos.

I AM SURPRISED TO SEE HOW UNDERATED FATES ARE. I FOUND IT DEFICULT TO FIND ANOTHER BAND THAT COMBINES EMOTIONAL PLAYING WITH SUPERB TECHNIC.
PARALELS AND PLEASANT SADE OF GRAY ARE DIAMONDS OF PROG MUSIC.
MATHEOS´ RIFS ARE MUCH MORE ´´INTELIGENT´´ THAN PETRUCCI´S PANTERA LIKE IDIAS
AND MARK ZONDER IS PROBABLY THE MOST CREATIVE METAL DRUMMER,
AND THE LYRICS. DT COULD NOT EVEN DREAM OF SUCH DEPTH.

Exactly.
Fates are really serious about everything they do. They just had loads of bad luck in the early 90s and didn't get the attention they deserved. Prog Metal fans should have tracks like
* The Apparition
* Epitaph
* The Sorceress
* Guardian
* The Ivory Gate of Dreams
* At Fates Hands
* The Eleventh Hour
* A Pleasant Shade of Gray Part XII
* Still Remains
* Another Perfect Day
in their collections. Most of them are simply essential - well, for me anyway as I tend to prefer originals to epigones.

I would call Fantomas experimental rock ... but since they're listed as prog metal here, I could have included them ... if there was more room for options ... they're one of my favorite bands.

Oh well, I guess that's one of the reasons why their fans love them: they're serious, melancholy, depressive, solemn, grave, grey, sublime etc. They are not suitable for parties, and, actually, they have one thing in common with Floyd. People who are into this kind of serious music find much food here.
Of course, I agree Fates are not as versatile as other Prog Metal acts - but they don't have to be, they should not be. Oh God, Fates without melancholy would be like Floyd without the guitar or Voivod without weird chords. But then again I even love Chroma Key and most albums by Porcupine Tree to bits - so what do I know?

I voted for Meshuggah.. a lot of those other bands just sound like
heavy rock with a metallic edge, not really progressing in my eyes. I
respect Voivod, though, and also Atheist and Arcturus who either didn't
make the poll, or I missed.
edit: oh, and Fantomas and Mr. Bungle could fit this category too, I love them both too.

I think I forgot Rush ... but I was rather going for bands that had their peak in the 90s. I recently bought 2112, my first Rush album. I think it's great!
It's sad that you don't know many bands from that list ... |

I think Opeth are doing the most interesting things with Prog Metal today, although I need to hear more PoS...

This is the second version of my prog metal poll, this time I added much more bands ... hopefully you'll find your favorite band,
APART FROM DREAM THEATER!
If you think that Dream Theater is the best prog metal band, please vote for the second best band instead (or one of the "protest" options). |
I HATE PROG METAL...
...is not the choice I made)
Well Mike... why is Anathema forgotten yet again???

Well, this was a pretty hard poll for me, but I voted PoS.
Allthough I'm currently enjoying Opeth a bit more, I think Pain of
Salvation is more prog metal than Opeth, because of Akerfeldt's voice.
Compared to all the other bands in the list, he makes Opeth a bit less
prog than them.
And Pain of Salvation is absolutely beautiful music: one of the few bands I might once prefer more than DT

of course SYMPHONY X!
Then probably Vauxdvihl/Clockwork/Payne's Gray, but sadly they are too unknown
But Psychotic Waltz and Adagio are great as well!!!

All of these bands are excellent in their own right, and do what they do very well. But the best of them all IMO is the dominant band Opeth.

Pfft! Where's Angra?! I almost voted for Ayreon, Shadow Gallery,
Opeth, SX or PoS, but then I saw the "other" choice. And I'm only
saying Angra because I can't choose DT.
