I started out as one of the no-metal-persons you described. For a long time I thought I couldn't stand anything metal related.
Then, about a year ago I made a concious effort to get into prog-metal by borrowing some cds and listening to the streams here on PA. I wanted to ease myself in gently and suffered through the whole stream of the "normal" prog-metal subgenre first. I didn't get it at all.
Some weeks later I decided to give it another try and started to listenen to the tech/extrem stream. There I discovered that I really like metal, really like growls and generally even prefer the harder stuff (the weirder the better).
The normal/symph metal still does nothing for me, while I find many bands in the other categories very innovative. I'm glad I finally got over myself and learned to like metal. I would have missed great music otherwise.

I listen to all music and think that labels are for people that want to find an excuse not to listen to something else out there ...
There's music and then there are labels ... you choose!
I keep thinking that if my name was Jesus, the last thing I would want is to come back here ... with all the labels andthis and that, you think anyone will get it ... and appreciate it? ... nahh ... it's not "prog" ...

I am a big "classic" prog fan and I do like some metal (Rainbow, Iron Maiden, etc.)... but I am not a big metal fan and I do not get bands such as DT and Opeth....
I do enjoy metalish prog such as Neal Morse's Sola Scriptuara and King Crimson's The Power to Believe...
So I am in between + I should give DT another try (any recommendations on where to start will be much appreciated)

I am both. I think that there's a lot of good prog metal band. And there's some prog band that have included in their soud some metal influence (Pendragon, Sylvan, Magenta). It's like metal is the new modern sound of prog or neo prog. I also like classic prog band that have no links to metal, like Yes, Flower Kings etc. So, i must say that prog metal is surley part of my prog experience.

I can honestly say that I got into prog metal and now I am metal fan as well thanks to Dream theater. Before I heard of the name Dream theater. I Was only into Classic Prog/Fusion and jazz.
Honestly!
So to anwer your question I do love progmetal as much as progrock!

I listen to everything pretty much in the Rock category. Prog metal to me is long songs with death growl..I don't listen to Opeth and other dark metal bands, dark lyrics are OK (DT, PT.....) but I am not fond of Opeth and the like.
I am not 100% convinced in my mind I call DT prog metal, if that includes bands like Opeth, Redemption, Spheric Universe Experiment....Maybe I call DT heavy/hard prog. I do enjoy classic prog...
I'm just a rocker who likes bands that happen to have more formal labels.... ehhh

I don't dislike DT ... and while it may not be everyone's preference ... most "prog" folks can't stand classical music next to their favorites like Genesis and ELP (hehehe ... had to say it!) ... and in the end ... I really think that the live album with the orchestra is magnificent ... if that soloist on guitar was Yo Ma, or a solo artist in great standing, everyone would think it was fabulous, and what a marvelous and expressive player that guitarist was ... but no ... we call it "metal" ... and the appreciation of someone's depth and determination in their musical talent is ... wasted.
DT is not about "metal" ... any more than they are "prog" ... but these might be the best generic words to describe them ... the music is amazingly well written, designed and defined ... and it really doesn't matter if it sounds like Orff, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven or Mozart ... but somehow in this board and a lot of "prog" places, they all want just Beethoven and Mozart ... ears having a hard time accepting/appreciating something totally different ...
Think of a moment in a movie ... that is almost exactly like the description of DT ... and it is the moment in the movie "Amadeus" when Mozart plays to the king ... and no one has a reaction to the music ... which is so different that anything else ... and the word is ... "too many notes ... yes, that's it ... too many notes" ...
Did anyone listen to the music? ... the answer would be almost ... NO ... they turned it off because it was "metal" ... not because it was "music" ...

I love most metal, so definitely prog metal. I have to recognize the original progressive rock's importance. However, there are metal bands doing things in the past 15-20 years that are doing more innovative things to introduce new ideas to music, and not simply just harsh vocals. Shame on you all who think that's the only stuff metal contributes!

I'm not really into prog metal, but I do enjoy prog that delves into the heavier side of music. Dial it back six years or so and I wouldn't be accepting of metal being part of the prog universe at all. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything though, nor do I have a problem with the idea of some metal as prog. As I have said before, I'm more of a big tenter than a narrow caster.

I am a metalhead but I like prog metal only selectively. PoS, Psychotic Waltz, early DT and ACT (who are actually called eclectic prog here anyway). I don't have a problem with any kind of metal vocals or the heaviness, obviously, but I get less riffs to bite into in prog metal and less melody than well, just prog, too so it's not often very appealing for me.

I 'm a fan of classic prog. I like Dream Theater but that's it. I downloaded an album by Symphony X recently and I like it mainly because of the symphonic parts, the heavier parts are a bit too extreme for my taste. I liked some Opeth too but the growling ruins the whole thing.

I largely agree with this point-of-view. I tend to find Prog metal very cliched - to the extent that I think putting the word prog with metal creates an oxymoron. When music is this formulaic how can it be prog?
