I absolutely love ELP's first 6 albums from ELP through Welcome Back My Friends...- with 'Trilogy' and 'Brain Salad Surgery' being especially brilliant. All of these are indisputably classic albums that fully deserve being amongst the best prog albums ever made. For this alone, I will always love the band. However, I think the reason the backlash started was what they would do later.
'Works' was the unacceptable face of prog; turgid 10 minute classical interpretations and mind-numbing displays of virtuosity. I'm one of those who always thought the whole point of music was melody and structure rather than pompous 'look-what-I-can-play' nonsense. 'Works Volume 2' was as inspired as the title- a collection of mostly rubbish outtakes and already released B-sides.
'Love Beach' was, along with Yes 'Tormato', one of the most disappointing albums of the genre- the front cover was horribly reminiscent of a Bee Gees album, and the music was shoddy pop with prog pretensions.
However, most prog bands have released a few turkeys in their time too- ELP are hardly alone in this.

I have just listened to Shrutis, Suritis, Puranas and Tantras......
Bluddy marvelous and in 1973 as well....ELP never attained this level because of the consistency problem...Yes produced 80 mins of sublime prog rock - as I have said before the piece of music is the paradigm that all prog bands should model their music on !!!!

Are you a strong blower, then, Rod Slobber?
Poof!
Stop leaving the door open like that!

I loved hearing Cozy Powell doing his drum solo to the 1812 Overture, when I was 13, but when I last heard it it sounded like something Spinal Tap may have rejected for being ridiculous.
Infact, when I think of Keith Emerson I'm reminded of another rock musician with classical ambitions/delusions..
'I'm a big fan of Mozart and Bach, and this piece is somewhere in the middle, a kind of Mach piece'
'This is called 'Lick my love pump''

I don't think there's anything regarding Keith's music thats delusional...
And Spinal Tap were reminicent of Black Sabbath... nothing related to ELP in the least...
Triumvirat sucks more than love pumps...
And someone doesn't like pompous music?? Then you don't really like prog, now do you?
