Topic: Which Master Groups' Debut Is The Best? Posted: October 23 2012 at 18:42 |
I didn't add King Crimson and ELP since they'd dominate the polls.
And for starters, I'd choose Camel. Their powerful debut showed the overall 'Camel' sound from the first album! With such classic songs as Mystic Queen, Six Ate, Curiosity, and Arubaluba, I find this easily the best debut (though most of them are great).

I'll vote Camel as well, their debut showed that they could really rock the shorter instrumentals. Just a pure masterpiece, easily a top 10 album for me. If I could add another it would be The Mars Volta's "Deloused in the Comatorium".

I've actually only heard three of these ( ) so I'd better not vote. I think Rush's debut is pretty good though. I stil need to hear Camel's, which I want to do because I like them a lot.

^It's an amazing record, I would recommend the tracks; Curiosity, and Arubaluba.

The live version of Arubuluba issued as a bonus track on Mirage blows me away, so I have no doubt I'd love the album.

Tough call (and I know and enjoy all of them), but I gotta go with Freak Out. I like it more and more with age.
Almost went with Magma, but.....

that would easily take over the poll if I put that up! I tried to keep 'classic' bands. Only 70's. ^and llama, you're missing out!! There's some decent tracks, but overall it's a classic Camel album. And Bytor is right, the instrumentals are incredibly solid. Especially on a debut album. Six Ate and Arubaluba are both some of my favorite Camel tunes

Would have voted for Floyd's `Piper' ten years ago - a knockout defining psychedelic debut album that sounds like no other album before or since - but my friend and I, who worshipped it, have totally OD'd on it. Don't think I've listened to it in years now....
But as much as I love the first Camel album, I'm going with the underappreciated first Yes album! A charming, jazzy rocker with lots of fiery playing, lovely vocals, an upbeat joyful mood. The album always cheers me up, and `Looking Around' is just a KILLER pop song too!
Have to say, if I chose `Other', `Earth and Fire's debut album is a total stunner as well, one of my all-time favourite debuts!! `Ruby Is The One', `Vivid Shady Land' - every track is great!!

i would say Frost*, it's just an epic album with an awesome starting with Hyperventilate and some incredible sounds... Jem Godfrey is AMAZING on the keyboard and Black Light Machine is, IMO, one of the best songs out there

I really do love the Yes debut too. Underrated.
Sweetness is so sweet! Harold Land is awesome, and Yesterday and Today
is hypnotizing (too bad it's so short). I never listened to the
band Earth and Fire!! At first I thought you meant 'Earth, Wind &
Fire' and I thought "that disco group is on this site?! Anyways, I'll look it up! Looks like Song Of The Marching Children is pretty popular...

Well worth checking out, Brandon! Their debut is a little more straightforward than the rest of their albums, but it just crackles with so much energy, full of acid-guitar psych rock songs with terrific male/female vocals. I always like to draw attention to that album, and Earth and Fire are just a great band in general!
And as you said, !

I always think of you HolyMoly when mentioning Earth and Fire, I know you're a big supporter of them!
I just dug the LP out and looked over it, not a bad song on that debut - ALL STUNNERS!!
`Wild and Exciting', `Twilight Dreamer', `You Know The Way' and so on!
I love the kind of awkward English translated lyrics on `Vivid Shady Land' like `Leaves all smashed on the river side, The trees are burning and they're crying bright' lol! And that upbeat chorus with `making love with our minds' bit is killer!
I also thought `Ruby Is The One' is kind of a super-sexy lesbian anthem too!

Tough choice between VDGG, GG and Camel, but ultimately went with VDGG. Love Aerosol Grey Machine.

I picked other-Triumvirat-Mediterranean Tales
Their debut is the most strikingly beautiful and brilliantly played ones by anybody i have ever heard. It tends to be a bit under-rated, though, around here. They did not have Helmut Koellen within their ranks yet, but Jurgen Fritz on keys leads the band amazingly well.
