the Dianno albums have indeed some proginess in them. Dickinson era had still some prog elements here and there, but completely abandoned the prog side when Adrian Harris left the band (albums 'no prayer for the dying' and 'fear of the dark' are melodic heavy metal), Blaze Baley era is not prog either. Then Adrian Harris and bruce Dickinson came back and brought back the prog elements in Maiden's music.

Even if they didn't influenced a million progressive bands, the Bruce-era albums are surely proto-progressive metal (Poweslave, Somewhere in Time & Seventh Son), though my favorite by them is Number of the Beast.
